Scam Email: Thomas Morris

This interesting thing to note about the scam below that was forwarded to me is that the scammer got really confused about his faked name. Is he Thomas Morris like in his From field, or Abbot Morris like in his email address, or just "Morris" like how he signed off on his email (who in their right mind would sign their email by just their last name... this scammer is making it easy to spot this as fake).

Here is the email I received this morning:

kathleen-- I and another artist friend received the following email this morning. The only difference was the subject line--each was the  name of a piece we had made...gotten off of our website.

I was suspicious and googled the name and came upon your blog. Thank you for what you are doing to help us all!

Rory

    Hello Abbot,

Thank you very much for your interest in my work.

Yes, those paintings are available, sort of ... "Pondering Nymphaea" and "Translucent Orchid" were recently accepted into a major juried exhibition which opens to the public January 19th and runs until March 3rd, 2012. Both original works are priced $1,750 ea, are beautifully framed and have glare-free museum-quality glass. Because the organization will collect 25% + tax of all sales, the prices will be raised.
If you are interested in purchasing either painting at the lower price, please let me know ASAP and I'll inform the exhibitors of the prior sale, so the piece can be marked NFS.
Thanks again and Happy Holidays to you!

  4. I got a Sam letter today too..

On behalf of my enitre Family, We are pleased to get your response

I am Kathleen Morris, 69-years old mother of two and a grandmother, i and my husband Thomas Finley Morris became a Powerball jackpot winner of 228.9Millon Dollars on August,10 2011. April,11th 2015 My husband and I came to Sweden from Burnsville Because of our recent Powerball jackpot win of 101million Dollars , " i have been doing charity work for 2 years since our first Jackpot Lottery Winning in 2011, Before our 2011 win we always played the lottery every week we never had any large payout from my years of playing usually $5,000 and most time below that amount. While it may be too early to tell how winning 101Millon Dollars will affect my family and i because we had alot of privacy and security problem with our 2011 Jackpot winning 228.9Millon Dollars, i know there is a lot of responsibility that comes along with the win.

“I’ve been handed all this gift by God for a reason, “I have to use it wisely and do good for others too, like a charity type of thing.”Over the years, i have worked as a cleaner in hospitals and office buildings also been involved in many fundraisers and charities, including volunteering for the Starlight Children’s Foundation but after winning the 228.9Million dollars alot has changed but with the recent win by my husband in Ponce, Puerto Rico when he went to visit our daughter who just gave birth to a baby boy we have decided to donate 4Million Dollars to you from our 101Million Jackpot winning . so if you are getting this mail from me it means you have been chosen by my family and i with the assistance from NIH and Linkedin as a beneficiary.
I have always prayed that God should help me and i was not surprised when i won my Lottery because i have always knew God has a plan for my family because i believe in the part of the Bible that says ask and you shall receive and consistently i have always asked for a miracle from God through prayers and i believe you do the same too.

  8. This is totally a scam, do not send any of your personal information. I received an SMS text message on my phone a few days ago saying they wanted to make a donation and to email back to kathleen061thomas@gmail.com for more information. This was for the purpose of getting my email address. I replied knowing it was a scam, using my "scam and spam" email address which is not tied to anything of mine personally. Almost immediately I started getting security alert emails, that somebody was trying to access my account from a device in the United States and to change my password. I've gotten a few of these emails each day since.

This morning I received the exact same email as mentioned above asking for "more info" (Name, Occupation, Country, Cell, Age). This is so they can use common algorithms to try and hack your password. Don't fall victim to this or other internet scams. Common sense needs to prevail, if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't.

    1. Ok, that is not an example of a "fake buyer" scam but more an example of the classic lottery winner scam.

But what is the same is how the scammer makes money - in this case, they will send a check for a large sum of money and ask the victim to cash it and wire part of the money to them to cover the taxes. But the check is counterfeit and the victim is out the amount they wired. That part is the same as the fake buyer scam.

The agreement letter signed with ASN Offshore Bank, For online transfers of my donation funds states that whoever we authorized to receive our donation will complete it through the use of an online account that must be opened by you the new customer, therefore note that your contact with the ASN Offshore Bank will involve the opening of a new online bank account in your name which they will automatically credit my donation funds into the new account then you would have to transfer your funds online yourself from your house computer OR office accessing through their online database to any other account anywhere in the world. That is ASN Offshore Bank Electronic Online - Banking policy so you should be ready to open an account with them upon your contact.
