It smelled funny, so I googled her and found this site. YUCK!
I got the same one as well. And I checked out the IP address but did not find anything off. Even though it did not sound right I replied anyway (with prices, and that I only took Paypal, and did not ship internationally)- and after a week she finally replied tonight (which is when I googled "Lisa James scam" which is what I should have done in the first place.) Anyway, I posted her response below:

"Hi XXXX ,
Hope this message finds you well. I am having a little problem with my
email account. I am out of town until next week Wednesday , I'm
taking my i pad (which for some reason can't fix the problem ), so it
might be best to contact me at this email account:
lizzzywitt0@gmail.com .
I am not sure if my husband has been able to forward the payment to
your mailing address but i will check with him and get back tomorrow.
I also sent your contact info to the Cartage company handling the
shipment of all our house decors and they promise to get in touch with
you. Try and make shipping arrangement with them and keep me updated.
Kindly get back as soon as you receive this email so i can be sure we
are on the same page.
Thanks for your patient.
Best Regards,
Lisa James.
Hi, Kathleen - I was suspicious when the first email arrived, but I replied
ReplyDeleteanyway - his 2nd email really got my alarm bells ringing and I copied part
of his text and did an internet search. I've submitted an on-line
complaint to MO Attorney General Chris Koster (not that I expect he'll be
able to do anything) - Eventually I found your site - here's the scammer
email and the scam for your blog.

Dear Mike,
Thanks for the message, i intend to give my wife a surprise with the
immediate purchase of the piece. Also If you'd like to know, I'm relocating
to Philippine soon and our wedding anniversary is fast approaching. So I'm
trying to gather some good stuff to make this event a surprise one. I am
buying yours as part of gifts to her (quickly before someone else grabs
it). I'm okay with the price, I think it's worth it anyway, so I'll be
sending a check.
As regarding shipping, you don't have to worry about that in order not to
leave any clue to my wife for the surprise. as soon as you receive and cash
the check, my shipping agent (who is also moving my personal effect) will
contact you to arrange pick-up.
I would have come to purchase the piece myself but, at the moment, am on
training voyage to the North Atlantic Ocean (I'm an ocean engineer) with
new hires who are fresh from graduate school and won't be back for another
couple of weeks.
Thanks
James.
PS: In the meantime, kindly get back to me with your full name (you want
the check payable to) cell phone no. and contact address (preferably for
fedEx not P.O box) where a check can be mailed to, so I can get the check
prepared and have it mailed out to you right away.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteJust received identical message from Mr. Chavaz.
I also received this identical email. Sounded suspicious like a generic fill in the blanks scam. Can anything be done to report James Chavaz?
ReplyDeleteI also had some correspondence with James Chavaz. EXACTLY like the emails above. Thank god for this website!!!!

Dear James,
Bradley forwarded me your email enquiring about the Penelope piece. He thought I might be able to answer any questions you have about it.
The piece is 66 x 58in, oil on canvas and $8,200.
This piece is actually being picked up from Bradley's studio tomorrow afternoon to be brought to our stand at the Affordable Art Fair in Manhattan on Wednesday. If you would like to purchase this piece we can hold it back from the shipment. I can also get you shipping quotes to have the piece sent down to South Carolina.

thanks very much for this resource . .
Just got the exact same thing, same wording, but from Richard Brown <123richbrown@gmail.com>, including "am on training voyage to the North Atlantic Ocean (I'm an ocean engineer) with new hires who are fresh from graduate school and won't be back for another couple of weeks."
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this and saving me time and hassle. I just received the same email from James Chavez details. I will spread the word to other artist colleagues.
ReplyDeleteSame thing here. Changed his/her name to Richard Brown and gave me the same story about a supposed anniversary and move to the Philippines.
ReplyDeleteCan't imagine what s/he is going to do with my email address and phone number, though? It's not that big of a deal these days to find that information.
Just got the same email - thanks for the post! Same wording & everything!
ReplyDeleteI too just received an email form James chavaz. I answered the email, but decided to google him and found your blog. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI received an exact copy of the email from James Chavaz saying he was from South Carolina. An alarm went off since my email address is not public. How did he get it? What can we do about this? If it hadn't been for this site I would not have known (for sure) that it was a scam.
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting up this alert!
ReplyDeleteDitto for me. Has anyone lost art to him or is he/she just hoping to cost us time? It's sad that he/she doesn't have the poetic language and charming affect of a Nigerian prince. I would guess a sociopath but they are characterized by easy charm.
Also I vaguely recall reading an article about a guy who conned many major artists into giving him their work. Ring any bells?
I have also received emails from James Chavaz - I have no idea what their angle is, but hopefully by adding my comment here, others will find it easier to weed his time-wasting out of their lives.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, I have lots of spare time having had my bank account stuffed with millions of dollars by a kindly Nigerian prince who also helped me enlarge my manhood and fixed me up with several hot Russian and Brazilian brides. The internet is wonderful.
So i got the same message with a different name...when I said no title was in the subject line he said that he wasnt lookong for any one piece in particular. So, another full of crap jerkface...aweaome...
