  3. Well, if you insist the check be sent overnight, you will at least force them to spend a little money, and knowing it is a scam, you can then ignore them once they've sent the check. No need to try and even verify it is a fake - it is.

    But that is about all you can do. Or just ignore the whole thing now. At least you haven't lost any money at this point.

  4. Same guy responded to me just now from a craigs list post. I said, you may as well go buy a new product near you for my price and the shipping your gonna pay. NO RESPONSE. HAHAHAHAHA What an idiot. I want to sell my product but I am not that desperate as to believe he would spend that kind of money shipping a used item that far when he could get a brand new one from the nearest department store. Don't fall for this please. ITS A COMPLETE SCAM!!! Thanks for this website, just made me feel 100% better about the response I sent him.

  5. I've been seeing a bunch of scams with scammers fishing through Craigslist ads today.

    Yeah, the scam has really nothing to do with what you are selling or where you are located. It is only about can they get you to accept receiving a check from them (which will turn out to be false but you might not know that right away, and always for more than what they "owe") and then get you to send the "difference" back to them via Western Union (and your money will be good). That is the crux of what they are after. The rest they really don't care about.

  7. rush rush rush - that is definitely one of their techniques. I said to one rushie scammer, get that check sent overnight and they did, and then I ignored all their emails and they found my phone number online and called me and - here's a funny part - threatened to turn ME into the authorities. I told them great and I'm recording the phone calls and actually have a person at the police department I'm working with. That ended the back and forth immediately.

    Just because someone says you have to move fast.... doesn't mean you have to.

  8. Hello,

    I just received contact from a scammer named Barbara Ann Briggs. She said she was terminally ill and had contacted me because she had one million five hundred thousand dollars and wanted to give it to me. The money was in London (all in cash) and I could have 20% for myself. She even referred me to her attorney. When you google her she has at least been trying since May to pull off her scam. In may she told someone the amount was one million nine hundred thousand.

    ReplyDelete
  9. This is actually a different type of scam. Why they think saying such a large unbelievable number is going to work... well, what am I saying - they've been using this one for YEARS so they must be successfully getting victims with it.

    This technique of scam is usually referred to as the "advanced fee" scam. The number is large - the percentage you get to keep of it is large but then there will turn out to be some small "processing fee" (or whatever excuse they come up with at this point) that you need to cover before receiving the money. The goal is to get people to send that advanced fee via Western Union and then they disappear.

    It's a little different than the scams we see targeted to artists pretending to buy their art, but it is good to be alerted and aware of ALL scams! Thanks!

      He state he was DEAF... what a prick!!
      I got him to mail me the payment OVERNIGHT and then it was here next day, I saw the amount he paid USPS ($32.00) hahahahaha
      then i scanned the check to a file and emailed it to the FBI
      You must send a COPY of the email you get and a copy of the actua SPOOF payment...

      Delete
    3. oh that is lovely! Not only did you get him to spend $32 shipping the check (kudos), but he sent it via USPS so a crime has actually been committed because that counterfeit check is now mail fraud. Your local Postal Inspector would probably take your information on this scammer, too.

  14. Got the same one this week.. Why won't these people just get a life and stop harassing other people???

    ReplyDelete
  15. Unfortunately because for *very* little cost (it cost nothing to send out millions of emails - if each one required a stamp, there'd be a whole lot less of them), they can make a LOT of money from victims.

    And it the goal of my blog to reduce the number of "successful" victims as much as possible.

    Glad to see you didn't get caught in it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Don't do anything. Don't reply. Don't think its a real request. It is not. Just delete it and move on. They send out so many of these and hardly care about those that never reply. They are after tricking those who do reply. Just delete it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I just got Terry's check. Fortunately, my fraud detector is on, and I thought the whole thing was weird from the start. How can I report this?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have some links in the upper right-hand column that you can use, but really there isn't much that can be done until there is actual financial loss (and even then, these agencies often just log it) but that is way too late for me - it's why I started this blog. I didn't see a way to intervene earlier in the process other than to post all the scam emails people send me (and that I get myself) so others can search online and find validation that what they've received is also a scam.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well i was the sucker, he got me for 2000 dollars and almost another 1500. Im stupid. The funny thing is that i am a veteran with 2 kids a wife and a home. Do these people seriously not care that they will rob the very person who makes it possible for them to do what they are doing? i guess so.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Christopher,

    I am SO sorry to hear you became a victim. That sucks! And it breaks my heart. Ack. Please use the links I have provided in the upper right-hand column of this blog and report your situation. Clearly there is now a crime that has been committed and you should report it.

    And by the way, - no, they do not care. They are amoral and lack the ability to know right from wrong or have a conscience. That is why we must help one another to keep them from getting more victims.

  29. I was on to him right from the begining, but I thought it was funny when he said he was going to send a check and never did. A month later, probably because I'm still trying to sell my van, he sends me another email notifying me the check is on the way and gave me the name of another shipper. I tried to find him and both shippers, but surprisingly (only because there is so many people in world and his name is not that unique) I couldn't find them listed anywhere. I did get his check this time--its still on my kitchen table--and now he is threatening me. Some nerve?! Well, I hope his relative at the Sheriff's office gets him (us) some results faster than my complaint to the FBI and FTC.

    Your email will end up on lists maybe and you'll get more of these but now you're educated on it so you'll be able to treat them as spam.

  48. You can turn the check into your local bank and see if they want to do anything with it. Other than that, there is not much you can do... but good for you for trusting your instincts and searching on it online before sending any money.

    So, if I got this right, what happens is, say my guitar is $900, and I get a check for $1500...Since I'm supposed to mail back the difference, they give you "fake money" and walk away with $600 of my real dollars?

  54. I got all the way to the bank and after calling Terry's "bank" found out the check was fake...My Deaf friend Terry said that he would get his buddy in FBI Fraud unit to "get me"...LOL...I told him that i would call the REAL FBI and have his friend arrested for impersonating a Federal Agent...cricket cricket...whats that sound....snap..NO TERRY.

  55. I have been stringing "Terry" on for a while, just to see how far he will be willing to go. I congratulated him on his upcoming wedding. Told him I was sorry that he had to go visit his sick daughter and hoped she gets better. I did tell him that I am familiar with the TTY for the deaf system and that he could call me. Number is listed in the craigslist ad, but I seriously doubt he even knows what item he is trying to scam me about. He has threatened to call his cousin in the FBI (actually gave me a valid address/phone number for a Florida office) if I ignored him. I do think that after 18 emails and about a month, he is somewhat frustrated and about to cut his time investment in me. Woe is me. :)

  59. I just an email about this: terryj822@gmail.com may be the guy act the same scam reply from Craigslist.org that I posted item.

    ReplyDelete
  60. This guy sure gets around from the comments I've read above. The email address he seems to be using a lot (terryj822@gmail.com) bounces from state to state. The name he used on me though, is Page T. Romney - perhaps the T stands for Terry.

    I knew he was trying to scam me when I received his second email (the first was just to ask if the item was still available). The emails came in quickly, so I knew he was online. I played along at first, and told him I'd be happy to follow through with the deal if he was willing to send me a postal money order instead because our bank is far out of my way and the post office is nearby. The response didn't come back quick like the others did, so I sent a follow up email that went like this:

    ~~~~~~
    By the way,
    I know you won't respond to that last email I sent about the postal money order... you may get to some people with your scam, but I know how to use the internet too, and you may be interested to know that Google works wonders for your attempted victims, who are eagerly getting the word out about people like you that take advantage of people that work hard for what they have instead of emailing people all day hoping to catch someone off guard.
    Now, you send me a money order, and I'll get the item to you, otherwise, leave my craigslist posts alone, along with everyone else's and spend your scamming time hunting for a REAL job so someone out there can have a reason to be proud of you.
    Thanks again.
    ~~~~~

    In case anyone is interested in the sob story he provided me with, here's the line he gave me once he knew the item was still available:Good, as a conclusion between I and my fiancee so I will buy from you because I have contacted some other sellers.But here the issue is we are very busy at this point preparing for our wedding. 63. I love messing with these scammers, ofcourse i dont waste too much of my free time on it, but every know and then (i sell alot of items) i like to toy with them. Sometime i'll give them a fake name and address and then when they send the check i pretend like i have no idea what they're talking about. I act as though I don't even have a craigslist ad and I'm not selling anything...this makes them soo confused and upset, & highly aggressive...i continue to pretend as though someone stole my email address and posted a fake ad on craigslist....
    Some may ask why, whats the point but to me its like when someone breaks into a house and steals nothing. This messes with the victim even more then if something was stolen, they sit and wonder for years, why did they break in??? Did they steal something that we don't know about?? It drives them crazy. This is what i'm kind of doing with these scammers, just confuse the hell out of 'em, to the point when they're sitting there wondering why someone would steal an email address, post a fake ad on craigslist, and then accept a fake check...why???? Am i being scammed?
    I don't know, but it gives me a good laugh when they respond soo confused and upset, they act like someone just stole their money!

    Hi! Mike, thanks for your reply. I am still interested and believing no one has bought it yet and that is why I am offering to pay the full price on the ad. I am very busy I will not be able to see it. If the picture you showed on the ad is what it is, then I think we have no problem with it otherwise, there is something new you would like to say about its condition. I will send you a bank check for both the actual and shipping cost. Don't worry, I will do the searching for a private transporter that you will pay when they come for the pick up. If we are moving ahead,email me back with the name and address for the cashier check.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Lots of reason, actually. For the most part, scammers know to stay "under the radar". Unless the financial loss is really great, authorities don't put priority on it. They also hijack other people's servers to send out their email and so tracing them down is difficult. And it is likely the scammer comes from a foreign country where it would be difficult to pursue and prosecute.

    And they know all this, unfortunately...

    I wrote him a nice response. I love messing with people.

    Ok. Some things you should know though since you won't be seeing it in person. Here's some details we couldn't put in the listing.

    The place has an infestation of Pthirus pubis, also known as crabs, and you and your wife will almost certainly get them should you rent out the space. Also, there's a lot of leaks coming from the ceiling, the unit next door has someone who practices playing the banjo for about five hours a day, there's really nasty mold on the ceiling but nothing some cleaner shouldn't take off.

    Also, we've trained a pack of three pit bulls to watch the property and protect the units at all times. Just make sure you don't stare at them in the eyes as they have a "pack mentality" as what animal services instructed us after the last unfortunate incident.

    If this is ok, I'll gladly send the information you need. I'm happy that you and your wife are happy with the space and look forward to receiving the check.

  81. Scammers are all about the numbers and about the maximum return for the least amount of effort. If the use of the same name is getting them continuing victims and money, they don't need to change it up. Even if so many of us recognize it as a scam email, sadly - really sadly, there are so many people continuing to fall for these and lose money. A scammer will immediately change up their fake identity and create yet another disposable email account if they have to, but they'll keep using the same one as long as it keeps bringing results.

    Sad, yes?

  82. lol its a complete scammer but i'm trying to scam the scammer see if he'll send me 30 dollars through WU to initialize payment ha lol

    ReplyDelete
  83. oh, that's very funny - you'll have to let us know if it works. I'm guessing most won't, but really it would be so funny to run across a scammer who would, on the promise of a bigger payout on his end. Very funny.

  86. Ah yes, the Most Holy Rev. Page T. .Newton... I get one of these about every two weeks from my business CL posts and for the entertainment value, I play along until I get the "check". I agree with the person on one of the earlier posts, I'll waste some of their time and money, that is the cost of their "business" plus, I am a FedEx shareholder!

  87. ...here's how I handled "Ms. Karen Foley Scammer Extraordinaire" - mt e-mail to her follows:

    So, deposited your check….then, I was feelin lucky, so I went to the casino and played the slots….won $4,700.00 yippee! So, when the bank calls to verify that your check isn’t worth the paper it is written on, I have the $2,000.00 to pay them back plus the $2,700.00 I won using your fraudulent funds…worked out great for me…

    Have a sparkling day!

    LOL - gotcha!

  88. that's pretty funny!

    Thanks for sharing. We all have our ways to entertain ourselves at the expense of these scammers. Somehow it just makes our day [smile].

  90. "With due respect my mode of payment..."

    Translation: "I'm going to trick you into wiring me your good money and thinking the money I send you is good... but it is not. And then I am going to disappear and go find another victim. Ha Ha"

    That is how scammers think.

    Glad to see you didn't fall for this one.

  91. This person is still at it. I got an email from a craigslist AD this week, with the same email address. I am not worried abut giving out my address because I am a registered and I sent him an estimate for work to be done on 4 laptops. Why would I have to send my contact info in an email when it is already on my estimate.....dumb. And why would anyone ship laptops back and forth to get repairs that could be done in their city.

    One must be diligent when transacting business and follow up with a little basic investigation.

  93. Initially sent a sms text message from 407-337-9757 telling me he was an American Airlines flight attendant and want to purchase my exercise bike immediately but the only way he could pay was via Paypal so he needed my paypal email address to send payment. Immediate red flag was that he was willing to send money and immediately arrange for pickup. He requested my address which I did not provide because I search online and found that he has used this same name, phone number and story about being a flight attendant before.
