Thanks for warning,I recieved the exact same emails and had my ego massaged and in fact a cheque has been sent to me and payed in.I never do anything until any cheque clears,but have now reported to my bank that it will be a 'moody'.If I am asked for any payment my answer will be 'no chance'.

The scammer 'Bernard Merrac' also added an address in Poland (where he said he lived) which when I googled it it went to this really lovely restaurant site where it was full of beautiful paintings. Unfortunately when I googled his name it didn't come up so I kept replying to him.

When I googled the address she/he was not listed as the owner of the property( which was in Allentwon, PA not London) and she/he also wanted to send a cashiers check. So happy I looked!

I have also recieved a mail from a "SALLY MICHAELS" riding_sally@yahoo.com, same address as "Dixon Lynette", in a very bad english and with simular interest of by ARTWORK. I know another artist from Denmark as me, who has recieved the same mail. We have both written to her, that we want money in the bank before we do anything, and we have not heard anythink from her since.

DeleteScammers don't deserve a reply. And when you do tell them you know they are a scammer, they are fine and just move on to the next potential victim. So any time they spend with you not knowing you are on to them, they are not going after another person. Just delete the emails as they come in.
DeleteOf course you can do what you feel is best, but I don't reply to scammers, and leave them guessing whenever I can. They deserve it.

I looked up the address - it's a house for sale listed by a realty in that area. I wasn't going to ship artwork before getting the $$, but still doesn't hurt to be suspicious.

ReplyDeleteI agree, best to just ignore and let them do the wondering if they have a bite or not. I had this once some years ago, I never let go of the Artwork but received the Cheque posted from Sheffield, Uk for more than the value of the works, I stupidly banked the cheque then had my accounts frozen for three weeks because I had banked a fraudulent Cheque.
Frustrating that nothing can be done to stop this. Clearly they have some success with it otherwise they would be onto other scams.

I also had a 'Sally Riding' with same message - I cannot understand where the scam is because wouldn't send anything until the 'cheque' is cleared - so, I take it that this 'Sally Riding'has nothing else to do!

ReplyDeleteThe scam doesn't need to get to the point of sending artwork out, in fact it really isn't about the artwork at all. The scammer wants to overpay, with some fake story if moving or something and using their shipping company, which doesn't exist (or exists but they have no relationship with the company). You deposit the [fake] check and they ask the extra amount be wired to their [fake] shipping company, which is just them at the other end of the wire, and the money is now untraceable and gone. In the meantime your bank discovers the check is fraudulent and withdraws the full amount back out of your as account.
ReplyDeleteThere are variations to the setup story but that is typically how this scam works. It's over before it even reaches the shipping stage.

Artecentro Art Gallery from Italy here... we got the same emails from Sally Riding, she also sent the wrong cheque, an amount of 17.900 euros instezd of 6.500 euros, so we became suspicious about her, and fortunately we found your site and now we will report her to our bank, and they will proceed with the judiciary way.

ReplyDeleteI am just in the process of liaising with 'Sally' 'Rise' 'Riding'...I had doubts because he/she never questioned the price of my work and has become very methodical in the arrangements which unsettled me.She seems to have even stopped massaging peoples ego's as her system is clearly working somewhere without needing too. I couldn't see how it could have been a scam until this morning when she started saying she had issued the cheque but the accountant had got it wrong so may require a repayment. This rang alarm bells, googled it and came across this blog THANKYOU!! Spread the word fellow artists wherever you can because this is clearly still working for them given posts on here go back as far as 2011!

It didn't ring true and so googled a bit and found this website, which confirmed the attempt at fraudulent activity. Thanks for the confirmation.
Its happened to me as well. Have had an email from John Page under the same email. I sent a list of works but felt something wasn't right with the style of languge. Thanks for this blog - have let them know my work is no longer for sale.

ReplyDeleteI'm curious though, what exactly is the spammer trying to achieve? Are they really try to amass a collection of art by sending rubber cheques to the artists? Do they then re-sell our art at massive profit to themselves, having only had to cover the cost delivery?
Or do they claim the artwork has been lost or damaged and ask for a refund? That would seem absurd, given that their cheque by then would have bounced.
It all seems rather unlikely. I can't work out what they're doing!
It's actually not about the art at all. The scam is already over by the time the victim artist is sending their art - likely to an address that is made up or certainly not theirs.
ReplyDeleteThe scam is all about the cash of the overpayment. They over pay with some story of why and then try to get the victim to wire the money - sometimes they say to a "shipper" who is moving all their stuff (there either is no shipper or they use the name of a real shipper who they have no relationship with) or saying they wife or secretary overpaid and send the mistake part back... there will be some story. Once the money is wired (to the scammer, regardless of their story), the money is untraceable and gone. And the orginal check will be found out to be fraudulent (banks will often accept the deposit of them while their system checks and then will withdraw the full amount once they determine its fake) or the credit card stolen, but the scammer is hoping the victim won't find that out in time and will wire the money first. And really once the money is wired the scam is over and they move on to their next victim.
The best way to avoid this scam is to NEVER ever accept over payments when selling artwork (or anything) online. And NEVER ever ever ever ever wire money to unknown people when selling things online.

The give-away is that the main email may be sent to another artists address. I have received one today. If the mail says nothing specific about their location or expresses any kind of informed comments, but includes things about money and says 'you are doing a great job' you can assume it's a scam. If you question them about their location and particular pieces of your work you usually don't get a reply. I then let them know I am forwarding their email details to the police. Thank you for this web site.

My partner started receiving emails from Dennison Brixon in December followed by emails from Lynette Dixon in January - also cheque received for £2100.00 more than the art work price - told to bank it and cash it. Unfortunately being an ex Police Officer I did not like it and finding out that the address given for the said Lynette Dixon does not actually exist in Solihull. West Midlands and the cheque coming from a motor trader in Essex - D N Trade Cars Ltd - we decided that the cheque sent would be better placed into the hands of the Police to see if they can back track and try to put an end to this vicious scam.

I got suspicious as I wouldn't describe myself as an artist, and I would have expected a potential costumer to address my work as pottery. And then the thing with the check... But I didn't want to drop it, in case it wasn't scam. So I researched and landed here!

ReplyDeleteSame here dealt with a few of these types of emails in the past. They usually ask you to pay the shipper up front and you have been scammed out of the fee.

However, 'Jocelyn's' language did seem weird as did his lack of curiosity over how to hang my sculpture, so I googled him and found you. So no sale. I couldn't see how to add to your blog so I am forwarding our email thread. I would be happy for you to include the relevant bit and include it as being from Anon as you have shown other people's correspondence.
The main point is that on your page Jocelyn was a long way down and operating under that name in 2015 I think. So it would be good for people to be looking out for the name again now. My final email from him was identical to one on the page, so sadly no chance that he could be any of the real Jocelyn Pages that exist.
I don't know if there is any way these people can be brought to justice. You are in the US, but I shall check out whether there is anything I can do in the UK.
I was happy to donate you $10 through paypal for the amount of grief and potential loss you help save us from!

ReplyDeleteThe scammers want their victims to think they are buying art, overpaying (telling a fake story about either a non-existent shipper or just saying it was a "mistake") with the intent to ask the victim to wire the difference...before the victim realizes the original payment if fraudulent - a counterfeit check or stolen credit card. It's never about the art - its about getting the cash via the victim wiring money.
