Scam Email: Rachael Cox

I'm seeing more scammers using their standard scam approach on Etsy, pretending to want to buy items. In order for their scam to work, they'd have to convince the seller to do the transaction outside of Etsy and outside of PayPal (though scammers do create fake paypal pages and then pretend to have paid sending a fake PayPal Confirmation page, or they will end up saying something like paypal isn't working or accepting their payment and then offer the wire transfer option they were after all along).

Remember, their ultimate goal to overpay with fraudulent money and ask you to send the "difference" on to someplace else, typically a non-existent shipping company, and always via a wire transfer. So their money is fake and your money is good. And they are untraceable once they pick up the money.

So just do not accept overpayments, do not accept money orders, only agree to ship to the billing address of a credit card (they will have some story about moving and needing items to go to the new address) - have them confirm the billing address (most scammers have stolen credit card numbers and do not know the billing address), and never never never never (have I emphasized this enough??) use wire transfers to do business transactions.

  2. I am in the same situation right now. What set off the alarm bells was when I received another email with a similar story. The guy just emailed me that he sent me the money via paypal already. Checked my pal and i only have my own paypal credits there. I was excited already that the paintings are going to be sold in just 1 week but oh well...too bad it's a bogus.

Now I'm scouring the internet for more info on this scam.

  7. I emailed Etsy to ask what was being done about these emails. They have cancelled Rachael Cox's access to Etsy. That person will probably just come up with another name. Wish I had the energy to contact the authorities to have this person arrested from scamming innocent people.

  9. You can see from the above comment that lots of people have reported this account to etsy and supposedly the account has been shut down, but it doesn't mean the scammer won't just open another account. So be on the alert for what these types of messages look like and just keep reporting them to Etsy. Not much else we can do. Those who actually lose money to this scammer can report it to the authorities, but it is not likely at all that they'll get their money back and I just don't want Etsy sellers to get to the point of losing money to a scammer in the first place.

Thanks to all for writing in and helping to alert others.

  12. Keep reporting them, no matter what name and email address they make up, keep reporting them to Etsy.

Scammers stay where it is easiest to do their business and steal people's money. Keep making their life hard and they will move on to another site where it's easier - that's why they are so prevalent on Craigslist, they have a pretty easy time of just responding to ads there and pretending like they are going to buy something, when they are not, and not getting shut down.

  17. Im not sure if this is a scam...
Ive had no emails but,I just got a large sale through Etsy checkout for some paintings.

It has already been paid into my paypal account. I even went through Google to open my Paypal account just encase.

The reason I query the sale is that the person has no feedback on Etsy and joined Etsy same day.(Probably not that unusual for first time buyers)

    They are unregistered on Paypal.

I am in Australia and its to an international address, Saudia Arabia, I havent sent to before.

Im not sure what to do, any help would be appreciated.

  18. This type of thing always makes me nervous, especially to such a destination. I would do two things - ask Etsy support for their advice - there have been scammers on Etsy lately and do they have any advice for if there is a way to know if this transaction is for real... and I would do the same thing over at PayPal. See if those two support departments might have any additional insight into this before proceeding.

PayPal might advise not to do business with an unverified account, but I have done this a lot and have been fine.

Did you google their email address and see if it pops up any results that would illuminate things more? Google the shipping address and see what does? Use Google satellite and go to the address and see what you see... if you can.

Please update us on which way this ends up going. I'm curious.

  22. I also got email from LARRY ELLISON, oceanographer, same story.
Unfortunately I was even stupid enough to pay the Western Union - BUT luckily realised it 3 minutes later - AND cancelled the whole shit. Crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The crazy thing is that (fake) PayPal confirmed Larry Ellison's money transfer to me, and everything looked super-official. So be ware of fake-Paypal messages!! Mine was sent from "service@paypal.intl.com" (instead of "service@intl.paypal.com")!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's a rare moment that a victim can reverse their Western Union transaction - scammers have runners to race down to Western Union asap in order to grab that money. So congratulations of beating them to the punch and saving yourself from this scam by the skin of your teeth. good for you!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, this is a very common ploy and the scammer is betting on the victim not bothering to log into their own PayPal account and checking that the money is there. They try to make that fake confirmation email look as real as possible.

Always log into your paypal account in a separate browser window and CHECK. Those extra few seconds of your time are worth it!

Again, glad you saved yourself from this. I'm glad.

  32. "Rachael Cox" is still alive! I also took her first mail seriously...until I decided to google her and came across this site!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yea! That is how I like it to work - that people know to google these things before acting upon them and actually forwarding money via wire transfer, which is what they will ask their victims to do.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Rachael is expanding to www.dawanda.com and i just received an mail and also responded. i also sent an invoice to pay via paypal the amount. then rachaecox685@yahoo.com came across with this mail:

I am about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up of the Item, I think you remember what I said in my previous mail that I'm working presently on the sea,so i tried to secure booking with my pick up agent, but they asked me to pay first before they can make the booking, and they only accept Western Union Money. Transfer for payments and they don't accept PayPal or bank transfer.

So I tried to send the money online but it's not going through and I am on the sea there is no way I can find a western union agent to make the transfer to my pick up agent, so i wanted to ask if it will be OK for me to include my pick up agent's fees together with your payments through PayPal,So you will help me wire the pick up fee to them via western Union Money Transfer immediately i pay you.I don't mean to bother you I'm sure you understand that I'm presently on the sea and there is nothing i can do to that. The bottom line is after I have made the payments via PayPal,you will help me wire my pick up agent fee to them through western union money transfer, I just wanted to seek your consent before going ahead with the payments, I will be very happy if my offer is given a favorable consideration,Respond as soon as possible so that I can send out you Payment.

    Regards.

    My answer was:

have no experience with western Union and am not sure with the safety with this transfer method. I have another offer to you: for 15€ more i will use my shipping agent to deliver the paintings. So there will be no extra fees and i can be sure, that the items will arrive safely!

    What do you say?

    Best regards.

and till now there is no answer. Happy, that i googled it! Is there any danger for me, that i sent my address and my paypal-mail?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Scammers will try and do everything they can - come up with ANY story to redirect their victims to use Western Union or some wire transfer. It really is the only way they can collect the money as cash and disappear without a trace. I'm often on a campaign to tell people stop using wire transfer services in ALL their financial dealings. Period. Would probably handle 80% of the scams out there today.

Providing your paypal address in itself is not a danger but what scammers do with this sometimes is then create a fake email looking like it is exactly from paypal saying there is something wrong with your account and please log in to validate your identity and re-activate it. Then they have both your paypal email AND your password and then they can do a lot more damage. So be very very very careful with your paypal password. Do not provide it easily to anyone - including Paypal, via email. Pickup the phone and explain why over the phone and they will understand because Paypal knows this phishing scam to steal paypal password is very prevalent.

But glad to hear you didn't fall for this scammer.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm glad you didn't fall for this one. Your first line of defense is what you did - search online and see if it is something already posted as a scam. That's how this blog works, we just keep posting our experiences and hope others will research their suspicious emails.

The next clue to look for is some mention of moving or being out of the country and using a shipping company (which is made up). The next clue is they will offer to pay via certified check or credit card (which is either counterfeit or stolen). The next clue, an important one, is that they will *always* overpay - by a lot. Asking the victim to forward the extra money on to the shipper (or sometimes just back to them) and ALWAYS via wire transfer, like Western Union or MoneyGram. Then you know for sure. It is how this scam functions.

I was very happy to sell a painting but suspicions regarding the payment of fees transport by me (and email from Poland) made me search the internet email address james.willx2 @ o2.pl and found it on your website with the same message received by me. Can anyone sending money to these people for the payment of fees?.
My point is that this type of fake emails are made by owners of websites to sell only through their websites and not by your own means.

Today account already Michael Johnson was delete by owner of website, and all my discussion with Mr Michael Johnson disapear from my Inbox ...

I was very, very happy to sell a painting, but I don't trust in any email message anonymous (jus a name) and olso I don't trust in owner of website selling art who make and pay this tipe of scam email !!! 51. Just got an e-mail this after noon from Rachel Cox, the oceanographer. Good thing i googled it and saw this site!!!! Thank you so much for alerting us!!!! I was so excited, only lasted an hour.... :S

  52. Rachael Cox demanded money via Western Union, so I suggested instead to tell her mum to come down my house so I can give her the money myself as a present ;)

  53. Thank you guys so much! I just recently received and email from Rachael Cox, and after a few emails setting seemed off. My conscious was like this isn't right, so I googled it and thankfully I found this site! I'm so happy because this too would have been my first sale. Rachel is back at Etsy.com and this time they are saying their sister instead of mother. What freaked me out was the "agent" and I'm like why would u send an agent to come to my house, and then secondly why keep asking me about PayPal when my profile says I accept Paypal. So I'm very glad I followed my instincts and didnt go through! Thanx you guys! Whewww dodge a bullet!

  54. I received a Rachael Cox oceangrapher offer involving a huge sum to a pick up agent and after too much "weird" googled it and got both saddened and enlightened. I hope I haven't given them to much ibfo. You are a hero!!!

  55. Thanks all for your expierience! I just got mail through saatchi online, from some "bill sexton" and the mails looked almost the same as yours. I got stressed out, and suspicios when he wanted to have my paypal-id and wanted to do the transaction NOW. I answered that I needed a few days to check my paypal account and asked him why he don´t want to buy through saatchi?
The day after his mess was gone from saatchionline and his "temporary" account too....

  59. It's happened to me the same thing with Larry Ellison !
    (larryellison805@yahoo.com)
I thought there was strange until I write his name and his profession on the web, and I fell on this site.
He's very clever because he answers to the mails and shows his interest, but without mention the name of the artwork.

    See here

my mail after being contacted by the same way :

Thank you for your message. I'm so glad you enjoy my work !
I had a few problemes with this website that's why I only see your message yesterday.
So are you still interested to buy an item ? And which one ? You haven't mentioned it on your message.
I'm the real owner of all that item.

    I'm expecting your answer.

    his answer

Thanks for the respond,i am a oceanographer and am currently on the sea at the moment, i am buying the item as a gift for my sister,i want to make it a surprise gift for her,she won't know anything about the gift until they get delivered to her, so i want you to reassure me that the item is in good condition as you have described.i can only pay through PayPal.So please kindly get back to me immediately so i can proceed with the payment and after the payment has been done,i have a pick up agent that will come around to pick the Item up immediately after payment.

    my answer

I'll happy to sell you one item, but you don't tell me which one you want that's why I can't give you a price !!! So please, if you really buy one for your sister, send me in your next mail the name of the item.
If I really understand, you'll send an agent to pick up the item after the payment. I'm agree with that but I'm not sure that you know I live in France. Does it make a problem ?

    his last answer

ok please send me the photos of the the item you have available now

So many thanks for prevent me to loose my work and my money.

  103. Scammer email: evaluateshp@gmail.com
    Name: David Page

The emails were practically word for word as you described. The exception was that the “check” was sent as a Walmart MoneyGram (please!) as a secret shopper assignment. I thought the two situations were separate incidents, one being an obvious scam and the other a real art buyer. My artwork ready to be shipped, as I waited for a legitimate cashiers check. Then I received an email today saying his accountant made a horrible mistake and mailed a check for way over the amount.

I Googled art scams and found your website. Thanks so much for this information!!

  110. Hello Kathleen,
I am an artist and thanks to you and your blog I luckely could avoid to get scammed. I got an e-mail from a guy from Ireland called Samuel Roland (sroland427@gmail.com). He says that he's a marine biologist and tells the same story just like Rachael Cox, but he is making a "gift" for his dad instead of his mum.

I started feeling suspicious a little too late, I already have sent him a payment request via PayPal that I have cancelled today.

Just wanted to inform you and hope it is helpful for you and your readers.

    Best regards,
    Dana

    Same scam by Samuel Roland.

    My reply:
    Hello Roland,

It seems dear Roland that you are quite a well known "marine biologist"!
Also your dad should have a very large art collection by now.

Happy trails and a safe passage on your "sea voyages" and may fair weather accompany you on future trips at sea.

I would wish you succes in the art market as a buyer but it seems you don't really buy that much. In this endeavor I wish you storms and headwind to no end.

He careful Roland old boy because some boats sink with all hands lost.

No money pappal scam here I'm afraid. Move on man.

    Beware

The weird thing is that some years ago I really sold a painting to a marine biologist from a potentially dubious country online. No scam there. But good to know this, thank goodness I googled it...
