  2. I too received the same request to buy my photos from Martina_George323@rocketmail.com. I suspected an issue when she didn't know precisely which pictures she wanted. Thanks for this post. I used spokeo to find information on Ms. George and learned that even a deep web search could not uncover basic information about her.

  8. +1 for Modet Aries.

My mom's a fantastic painter, and she caught this scam because she's smart. Your blog helped, Katie. I owe you one, and I've just made use of your Donation link.

One thing that should be noted here: all artists are passionate about their creations, and making a living at it is really tough. So having a 'buyer' show up, and then become a scam, is heartbreaking even if no money is lost. If this happens to someone you know, please give them extra TLC.

Thanks again to Katie and all who contribute here.

  19. "she" is likely a he and scammers do not care about the artwork and the scam is over before the art is ever sent.

They overpay with fake checks or stolen credit cards, ask the artist to forward the money for their shipper (who doesn't exist) via wire transfer (that's the critical part of this scam) and once the money has been wired, it is gone, untraceable, and so is the scammer.

Never ever use wire transfers and you will at least not fall victim to this particular scam.

    Hi,
I can only pay with giving you my credit card number, expiry date and cvv security code to run manually because my URL would not allow me to complete any transaction of such paypal online since i had problem with paypal payment before when my paypal account was compromised.
You can make use of PayPal to run my credit card with your computer through this link(https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/virtual-terminal) just click How it works and follow the steps as instructed on the paypal webpage.
    Accept credit cards virtually anywhere.
Use Virtual Terminal wherever you have Internet access-at your office, at a trade show, even at the airport. To take a credit card order, simply log in to your PayPal account and enter the payment details into the secure Virtual Terminal order form. We’ll process the payment and send you a confirmation.
OR i am also familiar with this merchant which is more easier http://www.bluepay.com/ it also allows you to process credit card without any difficulty.

    1. Please understand that the criminals using this tactic only need the victim to process the stolen credit cards and wire them the money. It is the wire transfer they are after, which leaves the victim holding the bag of stolen credit card transactions that the bank will surely take back from the artist.

When I checked the website for eurocargoparcel.com I did find a website but after that initial time the website was down. I emailed them and got this:

Ultimately I send them the information and got a quote. They told me payment had to be made in the form of a bank wire transfer and they would send the necessary information when i ordered shipment. Meanwhile Miranda Kleen wrote:

    Hi Deb,
Thank you for keeping me posted on the shipment, regarding the payment My bank will not allow the charge of paypal go through on my card because i had issue with paypal before on my card
You can look into http://www.bluepay.com/ OR PayAnywhere (http://www.payanywhere.com) which allows you to process credit card numb, exp date and csc on your COMPUTER or SMART  PHONE.
I want you to get back to me asap on how to proceed.
    Thanks
    Miranda

She also told me that her bank would not allow payment to Square Register. When i called BluePay the man I spoke to immediately recalled a Miranda Kleen trying to do the same kind of transaction with an artist the day before--requesting that he sign up for credit card processing and directing him to charge $5000 divided evenly between two credit cards. That finally keyed me in to the problem and my absurd trust. I googled Miranda Kleen art and found this website.

I do wonder how this scam works, I am not Dali and my stuff is not worth a fortune. I guess I am flattered? My google analytics tell me the hit on my site came from Chicago Illinois. If I could get a proper IP address I will attack it so hard and give them a little lesson. Email below:

  26. Hi Chris,

Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with your art. This scam is perpetrated on anyone selling anything, but artists are particularly vulnerable because we are trusting types, and we are always so happy when someone wants to buy our artwork. Scammers know this.

But the art is irrelevant to them. They just want to overpay with fake money (with whatever their lame story is to explain that setup), ask you to forward the overpayment part - typically to some fake shipper (but its really just them) via wire transfer (always this because that's how they get the cash from you in an untraceable way and then they disappear). Then, too late, the victim discovers the original money was fake.

Key flags: overpayment, asking you to forward (or return) money for them via wire transfer.

Also, know the IP number is rarely of any help because scammers hijack other people's servers in order to send out their massive spams or even if it has been individualized, they have found a way to spoof or otherwise hide their true location.

    Frustrating, I know.

But just everyone continuing to post reduces the success rate of these reprehensible scumbags and that is at least something. Every person we help avoid become a victim is a point for our side.

  31. Hello.

I've just had an incident of the similar scam. Here are the information on
    this one;

email contact from: jesicabrown1408@outlook.com ( calls herself Jessica
Brown, but see jessica is spelled with one "s" as in another Jessica on
    your list.....)

Script: She is interested in three pieces of my work, found on my website,
asking for the prices. She gives me an address in UK on a British Isles,
Gurnsey. Gives me a shipping company's contact ( telling me she uses them always and they are totally reliable ). She tells me to get a quote right
away. So, I do, and receive a very professional looking quote. The
company's name is *Transfreightglobalexpress*. I am skeptical, but curious,
so I check the website, and I found out that it was created in late May ( I
got this email in mid June ) in Germany. Next, "Jessica" tells me what I
have for her to run a credit card. I've just got Square set up, so I tell
her to call me with all the card info since email is not secure.
Immediately, she emails me all the info of a credit card, telling to make
sure it goes through. So, I do run the number, and it goes through. Now, I
am getting quite skeptical because she sent me all these info via email and
would call me. I talk to Square customer service, and they were very
helpful in telling it was probably a scam and I should refund the money
right away. So, I did. I sent an email to Jessica next day that I had an
early morning fire at my studio, and all my paintings were damaged. I
thanked her for an education. She wrote me back completely shocked and
sympathetic to me, telling me she would pray for me........ the end.

    So, that's how mine went.

How is everything with you? I picked interest in your artwork and
deemed it necessary to write you immediately. I will like to know if
you have shipped internationally before and if you have a merchant
that enables you to accept Visa Card or Master Card for payment?.
Could you please respond with your recently updated website so we can
    proceed from there
    Best Regards

  43. Thank you for the response,
I can only pay with giving you my credit card number, expiry date and
cvv security code to run manually because my URL would not allow me to
complete any transaction of such paypal online since i had problem
    with paypal payment before.
You can make use of PayPal to run my credit card with your smart phone
    or computer through this link
    (https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/virtual-terminal) just click How
it works and follow the steps as instructed on the paypal webpage.
    Accept credit cards virtually anywhere.
Use Virtual Terminal wherever you have Internet access-at your office,
at a trade show, even at the airport. To take a credit card order,
simply log in to your PayPal account and enter the payment details
into the secure Virtual Terminal order form. We’ll process the payment
    and send you a confirmation.
You can also download an application called PayPal Here through Paypal
    (https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/credit-card-reader) on your smart
phone in order to be able to run credit card as well or you can look
out for someone that has a credit card processing machine that can
    help out. .
I will be looking forward to hear from you so that you can give me
the go ahead to choose what piece i have interest in purchasing.

  48. Here we are two years later, and the scam continues...i got this email from Belly Jordan in Gibraltar, and subsequent emails match all the examples described above...now the fake shipper is EdgeExpressDelivery.com:

    Subject: Artwork Interest

    Message: Good Day,
How is work and family? I picked interest in your artwork and decided to write you. I will like to know if your artwork can be purchased and shipped internationally?. I can email the artwork of interest and payment will be completed in full once you confirm my purchase order with a quotation. Kindly let me know when you are in office and ready to take my artwork order also let me know if you accept either Visa Card/MasterCard or PayPal for payment
    Best Regards

When I sent her a list of available artworks, she replied:

    Hello,
Thank you for the swift response these are the artworks i have chosen from your site so i want you to get back to me with the availability and cost price confirmation of each so i can give you the credit card number to run for the payment

Then when I asked about her location and shipping, she replied:

Good to hear back from you below is my address so you can get the shipping cost and sum everything up so that you can let me know what is the total to pay and acquire the pieces. Although i do not know the courier or shipping method you are planning to use but i must be honest with you it is a different ball game with delivery here which i think could be the same in most places due to the deteriorating economy all over the world. We pay additional fee at the delivery point here in Gibraltar because the couriers will never bring the package to ones house. Couriers like Fedex, UPS, DHL are not worth it here especially USPS and TNT all of them are not rendering good service here probably because they have already made names and well known. Please you can contact this courier https://www.edgeexpressdelivery.com (info@edgeexpressdelivery.com)with the weight/cost of the artwork and request the shipping and insurance cost to my address because they ship and deliver safely without having any issues with customs or loss of package. Furthermore unlike other couriers they will deliver to someones door step without requesting any further payment at the point of delivery. With other couriers the package will not be delivered to your address rather you will have to go to their office to pick it up and when you get there you will be asked to pay additional money before collecting it. I hope you get the shipping cost as soon as you can and total it up with the cost of the artwork so that i can give you the payment before the shipment is sent out. I will be looking forward to hearing from you asap. Thanks

    Gibraltar

When I asked her how she found me, she said:

PS : regarding your question my husband stumbled on your website when he was doing some shopping and he called me to check it out because we are a family that cherish artwork a lot. And i must say this your art will have a good home here.
