I received the same email, and in fact she sent me the check. I almost fell for this, but checked it out. I'm working with the bank, the state attorney general's office and the FBI to report this. I also received a similar post from a Greg who is supposedly sending a check, and I will turn this over to authorities as well. So glad others had posted these as it alerted me to stop the process before being taken to the cleaners. John

I actually don't get how he/she could do a scam in the wedding photography industry as I always ask 50% of the payment prior the wedding day....
but still good to know, I will not answer back
"...my finance manager" is just a variation of "my shipping agent". Basically, they will attempt to overpay and say either forward the over payment on to another vendor as part of the [fake non-existent] wedding or they will just attempt to overpay and say oops, can you wire the mistake part back. In either case, the original payment will be a counterfeit check or stolen credit card so the victim is out the difference.
DeleteWay to avoid this scam? Never accept an overpayment for any reason and never wire money doing a business transaction for someone trying to buy from you.

I can not understand what benefit the scammer will get if there is no wedding?

They don't care what they are pretending to buy. They over pay with a counterfeit check and ask the victim to wire the difference to, well, they make up different reasons why - a shipper, their wife or accountant made a mistake, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe triggers to this scam are: an overpayment and a request to wire money.
Don't accept over payments and don't wire money when selling online.

The scammer will agreed to whatever prepayment you ask. Then they will have some reason to over pay that prepayment. Then they will ask to wire the overpayment either to someone else or back to them
ReplyDeleteIf the victim in fact deposits the prepayment and wires the difference, it will then be discovered the original check is counterfeit and the bank withdraws it from the account and the victim is out the money they wired which is now untraceable. It never gets to the point of the items or services being sold. The scam lies in the prepayment stage of the sale.
One step further .. also a weddingphotographer .. but i guess that here she/he explaines what they are planing to do .. I will just cut the check into pieces if it should ever arrive ... ;)

ReplyDeleteAfter Christmas I received an email from 'Steven', from an email address called 'Dorothy Rudy'. He said his wife loved my paintings and he would like to buy 3 for their anniversary and would like to know the price. One of the ones he wanted had sold, so after more emails we agreed the price for two. Then he emailed (below). When his cheque arrived, it was for £3,500, which was very much more than the £250 cost of the two paintings plus p and p! He wanted me to bank the cheque and return the difference. I became suspicious, so looked on-line and found this website. Thank you so much to Katie Moe and to everyone who has posted!

ReplyDeleteClassic stupid scammer made up story. Glad you didn't fall for it. Wrong check but go ahead and deposit it and wait for further instructions - gads!! Hate scammers.
Thanks for all your posts. This has stopped me from falling foul of this con artist. As amateur artists for someone to want to buy makes you feel good but to then be conned could cause severe loss of confidence.

I received the following from a supposed Russell Holtsman at RussellHoltsman98@gmail.com. It has all the earmarks of the Rudy scam and also the Mike Evans scam that swept Austin and other art communities last year. I will not respond.
