Scam Email: Mathews Coughlin

Kathleen,

Here is another Scammer.  Thank you so much for your information.

Thanks

D

Subject: ATTACHED PIECE!!

Dear D,

Thanks for the message, I must tell you I intend to give my wife a surprise with the immediate purchase of the piece attached. If you'd like to know, I'm relocating to the Philippines soon and our wedding anniversary is fast approaching. So I'm trying to gather some good stuff to make this event a
surprise. Kindly email me the asking price asap.

As regarding payment, I would like to inform you, that my wife handles the family credit card/bank and Paypal transaction. So i would authorize a check to you for the payment as soon as i have your full name and contact address (preferably for FedEx delivery no P.O box). Also, as soon as you
receive the check and it clears your bank, my shipping agent who is also moving my personal effect will contact you to arrange shipping/pick up of the piece from you (this is to avoid my wife receiving it, if been shipped directly to my address which would ruin the surprise for this event). You both have to sign a proof of pick up at the most.

I would have handled this much differently if I'd been at home but i am actually going offshore and won't be back for another couple of weeks, and do not have access to a lot of cash over here to expedite this transaction... trying to kill two birds with a stone. :-)

Have a Positive Day!

Mathews

PS: In the meantime, kindly get back to me with your cell phone no. so i can try and call you later as the phones may be working better when this storm passes through.

I am Wilson from Snyder Texas. I have been on the lookout for some artworks lately in regards to I and my wife's anniversary which is just around the corner. I came across some of your works which i found quite impressive and intriguing. I must admit your doing quite an impressive job. You are undoubtedly good at what you do.

With that being said, I would like to purchase some of your works as a surprise gift to my wife in honor of our upcoming wedding anniversary. 10. but how he Wilson Coughlin, wilsoncoughlin@gmail.com can steal my money by buying my art?????

    ReplyDelete
  11. It really isn't about the art. The scam never gets to that point... or it doesn't really care.

They will overpay with some fake story about a shipping company and ask you to deposit the check and send the difference on to a shipper (who doesn't exist) via wire. It's the scammer at the other end of that wire and your money is gone because the check is counterfeit and even if the bank "accepts" the check, they have time to verify the funds and authenticity and they will reverse the money back out of your account.

The scam relies upon trusting people, artists who are excited to sell their work, and the delay in the bank verifying its a counterfeit check.

You can avoid this scam by NEVER accepting overpayments for any reason, and NEVER EVER EVER wire money to someone if you are the seller, for any reason. Bingo. The scammer will quickly move on to the next potential victim.

The images (as well as the dimensions) are on my website already, so there is no reason he would need for me to send him some images. Duh...

  26. I still find it astonishing that scammers use the very same email template that has been in use for DECADES. You can see proof of that in posts in this blog. Decades. Sadly, this format must still be successful for scammers... I wish that weren't so.
