Scam Email: Dillon Adams

Here's another one, though a time ago we already had reported this one as Dale Adams.

From: Dillon Adams [dillonadams.group@yahoo.com] IP: 41.138.182.120

Hello,
We own a store here in Australia and willing to purchase from you but before we proceed we want to be sure your email is correct and also to confirm if you can follow our order up via email since we will want the transaction to be done via email. We know of a freight forwarder that will pick of the order at your end since they are less expensive compare to UPS,FEDEX,USPS AND DHL. Beside they are perfect in delivery to the remote area we are in AU. Payment mode will be credit card, USA BILLED Mastercard (NO PAYPAL). Confirm this email before we proceed to send the quote of order.

Kind regards,
Dillon Adams & Group.

  5. They will end up sending a money order or postal check for *more* than the amount (with some silly story about how a third party shipper needs this or they are running out of time or something) and politely has you to send the "difference" to the shipper (which is actually them). The original check will turn out to be fraudulent but your money will be good so you are out the money and the artwork.

Those are the basics of how it operates. I'm trying to make their lives miserable by just exposing them as much as possible so more and more people will become educated on how to spot these before they send any money or artwork.

  12. I have received about 10 emails and was ready to have my company ship. We have a credit card but didn't charge. What could happen if the card works, how can we be scammed? all correspondence has been email.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Typically, the card won't work. But also typically, they are not usually after the product itself, but the cash "difference" between the amount and some large overage they send, saying just send the difference back to them.

I don't know if these scammers are using stolen credit cards and count on the delay between getting the number and it being reported as stolen or not. If your merchant account has a way to just validate the card without charging it, try that and see what happens.

But if you are exchanging emails with Dillon Adams at dillonadams.group@yahoo.com and he says he is from Australia, then it is a confirmed scam. Don't send anything - including money back from some "overpayment".

  15. I have also received an order and yes they provided with a credit card. But I was suspicious since it had to do with an interesting shipping method. So we decided to search for the name of the person and this page came up. So we have confronted and emailed this link to them and we have not receive a reply in their defense. Definitely is a scam. Thank you all for posting.
Saved us a lot of trouble.

  16. I need advice. I got a different group also from AU emailing me see below (Justin and group) . And they actually paid via a credit card and I ran the card it went through. I told them I won't be able to ship the items in a month so I haven't shipped out my items yet. but this morning I just transferred $720 shipping fee via Western Union (because the credit card charge includes the shipping charge). I was suspicious but I already got paid. what should I do now?

  18. You can call Western Union immediately, but my guess is its too late for the $750 shipping fee. Something about the credit card will turn out to be false - its either stolen or someone doesn't know their credit card is stolen yet and when they find out, they will do a chargeback.

This is reason there are so many scam emails out there - they are making good money. My heart just sinks every time they succeed.

Also look at the links I have in the upper right hand corner. Report the fraud (which it is now), to your local authorities and the FBI. Not saying they can recover anything, but you need to file a report.

So so sorry this happened to you. We all have to be that much more vigilant!

  19. Okay, I feel better. The poster above acted quickly enough that they were able to stop the money transfer. Whew!!!!

  20. YES! THANK YOU! I knew this guy was full of crap...

Number 1, he would not provide me with the name of the city.
Number 2, when I spoke with this "shipping company" they REFUSED to ship with a Certificate of Origin to Australia from USA ((WHO DOES THAT?!))

This was so sketchy, he asked for my top ten and then said I could give him 20 of each, whichever sizes.

Besides, we sell designer men's underwear, and he was supposedly a straight married 60 year old man, obviously strange...

  21. Well they almost got me! Same exact email as above. I ran the STOLEN credit card for $5700 and I was seconds away from sending them $2100 by western union before I realized something wasn't right. i called my merchant card service and they directed me to Chase because it was a Chase Card. and they let me know it was a stolen card. They keep emailing me too! Its walesretailstore@yahoo.com and Collectibles Fast Movement [freight@collectiblesfastmovement.com]

  23. I received an almost identical set of email, but from Smith Bill Enterprises in AU. It seemed fishy, so I started searching Google, and landed here! Fortunately, no money has been exchanged yet, and no word about overages etc! Let me ask one question for clarification: if the credit card they provided goes through, then what? Later Master Card can issue a chargeback and take the money back from the merchant (me), making them and their cardholder free and clear, and I would be left without money or my products? What can we do to report these scammers ~ right now, they dont know that I know this is a scam!
    ~Bunny

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bunny,

There is not much to report until there is some financial or product loss. I suppose you could report the credit card to the card company but that will only speed up the them starting a chargeback process, and it doesn't sound like you are at the point of accept the charge in the first place. So I guess calling the card company would help them alert whoever the owner is that their number has been stolen. Happen to me. It was my card company that alerted me. So I know this happens.

Out best best to just keep increasing the number of people who do NOT fall for these scam emails.

  25. I have been CONTINUOUSLY receiving emails from them, but this last time they made a small adjustment to the email to include fake account numbers (so as to come off as more legit). But I recognized the wording, and recognized that it was the same scammer.

Here is the updated email he sent, hopefully no one falls for this guy:

  26. Just McNeil?? this scammer couldn't even bother to come up with a last name? Maybe he just wants to be called by his last name, like MacGyver. Funny.

Yes, the scammers seem to be loading down their emails with all kinds of official looking numbers but it doesn't make their scam any more legit.

Good for you for not falling for it.

  28. I received the same email today. I received at least one of these type of emails daily, sometimes several in a day. I either delete or respond that I would love to sell them whatever they want as long as the items are shipped to the verified credit card address. Also, I offer free shipping to them. I have never heard back from any of these scammers.
    Michael

    ReplyDelete
  29. Michael, those are a couple of really great "screening" ideas. Good for you!

Free shipping won't stop them from sending a check for the amount of the art and then sending more and asking for the "difference" returned to them via Western Union... but I like the idea that if they are trying to use a credit card, shipping it only to the verified address on the card will certainly discourage them... but I suppose they could still have you ship the art out to the verified address but ask for the "difference billed" back. Unlikely, but I can see a desperate scammer still working around screens.

But it IS a good deterrent - the scammers are more after the easier targets...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I got Mcneals email today! What a typical scam.... for one - NEVER do any business with someone who wants to get Western Union involved. There is no way to trace where the money goes - It's a scam artists dream. Second of all, if they ask you to pay/get involved with their freight forwarder, it's most likely a scam. If this international company truly knows how to run a successful business, they will have an american freight forwarder lined up. You shouldn't have to get involved. It's as simple as that...

To help protect your company, I would suggest ALWAYS calling the credit card company (Visa, MC, AMEX) for international accounts and verifying the name and billing information on the card.

Hope this helps! And remember - If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is :)

  32. I got an email from a Leonardo Brown (leonardostores@gmail.com) at 1264 Greenhill Avenue Eastwood SA 5063 Australia, and after many back & forth emails regarding an order, I asked (per my bank) for a picture of the credit card (both sides) and ID. Have yet to hear back since. Scam?

    ReplyDelete
  33. It has some of the tell-tale signs of a scam. They won't be able to produce the photo of the credit card because they use stolen credit card numbers (and do not have the actual cards in hand) and rely on the that these are not yet reported stolen but will be as soon as the charges show up on the owner's statements... and will result in a chargeback for you. But they won't be able to produce a photo of the card so you won't hear back from them.

The key with these scams to look for is they will ALWAYS pay more than what is owed with some story of why you have to forward the difference (either on to a non-existent shipping company, or back to them) via Western Union. That is when you can for sure know its a scam. But when credit cards are involved, asking for a photo of the front and back is also an interesting "screening" technique.
