We've posted about this one before, but I received another one just this morning so I am posting it again. Nothing different about this one except instead of "Australia" it is "Norway". And scammers lately have been using the method of saying upfront they will pay by credit card - trying to convince people that makes their request more legitimate. But it is not more legitimate. The card will turn out to be stolen - even if it clears as good, because scammers use stolen cards and rely upon that short period of time before it is reported as stolen. But it will end up in a chargeback. Also some scammers say they will pay by credit card but then have some reason later in their emails as to why they will then send a check instead, getting their scam back to the more traditional format. In all formats, they pay more than is owed and ask you to send the difference back (usually to some non-existant shipping company) via Western Union (because once it is claimed from Western Union, there is no getting back or tracing who picked it up).
Okay, this one is short and sweet because he's waiting for me to reply (and I won't) to tell his longer story. The originating server IP is 67.220.201.146 [server.girlkw.com] out of Oklahoma but scammers often hack into servers from which to send out their hundreds of thousands of emails. So no telling on this one.

ReplyDeleteAnyone ever got something form James Peter regarding the estate of a long lost relative?
ReplyDeleteYes, and asking for TELEPHONE number...which I declined. Who knows what they would do with that????
DeleteThe scammers seem to draw from a list of fake names because after awhile, they are seem so familiar. And scammers will use these names across several types of scams. They don't limit themselves to one type.
ReplyDeleteBut the estate of a long lost relative is a very old scam and one, it seems to me, so easy to recognize as a scam. Typically because the amount they reference in their initial email is always so huge as to be ridiculous. They get their victims by asking for fees to "claim" the money or other methods of getting the victim to send THEM money.
This is an easy one to just delete.
James is still at it. Received one of his emails just this week 01.11.11
ReplyDeleteAnd one more from jamespeter147@gmail.com received 03.11.2011
ReplyDeleteGood day,

ReplyDeleteGood day,
Thanks for your response below here is the list and qty of items that our company needs let us know if you have this items available in stock at the moment or the ones you can supply us with at this time.
[ACTUAL ORDER REMOVED TO MAINTAIN PRIVACY]
Kindly calculate the total cost of our order so that we can provide our credit card account information for the payment of the order and the shipment. But about the shipment we will have our own shipper that will pick up our order directly from your location,we would have preferred to ship via DHL, but we don't have account with them anymore due to their high tariff,so you DON'T have to include the shipping fees, just give us the estimate of the order ONLY for now,So we will use our own shipping agent they will come and pick our order from your location directly.
PLEASE NOTE: So as soon as we send our credit card account information to you,the payment of our order will be charged on our credit card account information and also for the payment of the shipping,So you will contact our own Shipping agent, once you are able to get the shipping cost from, you can also include the 5% Processing fees if required for the charge of the shipping fees. We would have paid the shipping fees our self directly to the shipping agent, but at this time they dont accept credit card for payment,as they are not yet set up to take credit card for payment for now, they are upgrading their credit card machine at this time. so what we want you to do is to contact our shipping agent so that they can figure out how much pick up and shipping would be,because we already have some large merchandise with them already which after picking our order from you, they will then send them together to us here in Norway,so please note all this and get back to us with the estimate of the order so that we can give you the shipper's details for you to contact them and find out the cost for shipping,so as to get our order processed and completed.
Thanks for your corporation.

Can you please email me with the total cost of my order and don't worry about the shipping cost because i have my personal shipping agent that will come for the pick up of the package in you stores and i have inform them about this and they told me the best way to come for the pick up in your store is for you to email me with your store address and the time the package will be ready for pick up with your convenience time and date, so please kindly get back to me with this details along with the total of my order so that i can give you my card details waiting for your swift response Warmest Regards."
ABSOLUTE SCAM - STEER CLEAR. I truly hope that we manage to beat them at their own game SOON!
They certainly wrote out a long story, trying to head off all the questions that are going to come up as sounding "fishy". And yet it is still so fishy. Too many funky things going on in this story.
ReplyDeleteGlad you didn't fall for it.
uhh just got one...bloody hell
ReplyDeleteI cant believe it!!!! I was about to fall in the trap today..Just received one exactly like the one above few days ago from Norway..I was completly intrigued as its a unusual way to place an order..when I saw that the shipping agent he asked me to contact was in Malaysia..I became more than suspicious, couldnt found any detail about its company and just typed james peter and here we are I found this page....Oh thank god thats the end of the road for this story....
ReplyDeleteBy the way thank you very much Katie for posting this otherwise I would be still wondering....
ReplyDeleteThank you Katie for your post about James Peter I also received an email
ReplyDeleteScam! Scam! Scam!
ReplyDeleteWe are a textiles company (not art in the "strict sense"). Same scam. Same wording. Same address. Different name "Michael Mall". Malaysian freight forwarder may be legit:
Freight Logistics Delivery
175 Jalan Ampang
50450 Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia
MALAYSIA
Even if the scammers sometimes pick the name and address of real freight forwarders, it doesn't mean they have any real relationship with those companies. This is just the part of the scam where they justify why their victim is sending money to the "shipper", via Western Union, because then it is just the scammers themselves waiting at the other end of Western Union to pick up that money and disappear.
ReplyDeleteBut you make a good point - some scammers will just make up the name of the shipping company and some scammers will grab the name and information from a real company that they have no relationship with.
I got the same email , and he sent 3 money orders that i was to cash it at my bank and send the money to india some where , dont fall for these scams !!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHe's still at I just got one today - wanting to order goods for his Company in Norway. I am so glad I checked this out before being totally sucked in. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe just got this one too, we are in Canada with a small gallery, he wanted books. When I asked him to do a money transfer we got an angry reply back. thank you soo much for posting this!
ReplyDeleteWe received one from joemark77@gmail.com company name & address: Joe Mall, Universitetsgaten 47, N-0162 OSLO, Norway saying his shipping company was:

Well done for making people aware of these scammers everybody
WOW! Same dude, different name:
ReplyDeletePowell Paul
Company:
Powell Mall
Universitetsgaten 47
N-0162 Oslo, Norway
Different phone number
BUT....SAME SHIPPING COMPANY! Coincidentally tho, the contacts name was none other than.... Robin Paul!
A lot of thing should've tipped me off...what finally did was when they INSISTED I use their shipping company, (even tho I was quoted about $1100 LESS by another company) but that I needed to pay them thru Western Union....Funny, they couldn't wire the money for the merchandise tho, for that they wanted to email me a credit card number.
WTF???
HAd Exactly the same as thins today. Getthese quite frequesntly but didnt catch on as its usually Japan and they were in Norway. I offered him free shipping but still insisted on using his shippers. Sussed them out when their shippers address was in Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteDodgy Time Wasters!!!
GOT ONE today!?! Gmail sent that straight to SPAM! Glad I did a quick search about this. This time is shipping to Norway.

ReplyDeletei hope someone catches him and give him a smack!
Hi all-
ReplyDeleteI got the exact same one today myself! Problem is, we ship via Canada Post, for free, so he's going to have a hard time convincing me to pay something to someone else - perhaps he'll also wish to pay by cheque...
I'll look forward to what this scam develops into...
Thanks for the heads up!
Got the same email from James Peters a few days ago. He wanted to order some of my photos. Exactly the same wording, same address in Norway and same insisting on giving me his credit card info.
ReplyDeleteWe exchanged emails few times but even after I told him that I can't order for him and he will have to do it himself he sent me this:
Can you please email me with the total cost of my order and don't worry about the shipping cost because i have my personal shipping agent that will come for the pick up of the package in you stores and i have inform them about this and they told me the best way to come for the pick up in your store is for you to email me with your store address and the time the package will be ready for pick up with your convenience time and date, so please kindly get back to me with this details along with the total of my order so that i can give you my card details waiting for your swift response Warmest Regards.

I too received a few days ago for Norway shipping. It seemed a bit wrong so I Googled "joemark77" and found your post from nearly 2 years ago. Obviously he is still going strong. Anyway I wanted to say thank you so much. The sharing of this type of information can prevent people losing time and money.
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha, that's right, it looked to good to be true. But that fishy smell made me do some research. I got email from Jones Brown brownjones4@gmail.com , shipping to Norway.... They got smart, I did not even give them my site link, they knew items names I offer for sale. How can I make money on these guys and punish them? Ideas?
ReplyDeleteI just recieved the scam from Norway, but the name has changed. The company is called Donald Mall, same address (Museum of Art) and calls himself Donald Jones. Wish they could be stopped. Messes up my work flow and my website.

I received the Norway one today regarding buying from our store! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteSadly, scams are rife and though we are in a recession; to receive an order with promise to pay pro-forma (upfront) and via credit card may sound appealing please look between the lines.
ReplyDelete1) The time at which you received your enquiry (out of working hours?)
2) The lack of company profile and credibility at the bottom of their enquiry.
3) Structure of enquiry
4) Note; CREDIT-CARD payments can be revoked!
5) Thus, the need to work diligently is critical at all times
6) Note; the haste of the buyer to skip dialogue on key negotiations and instead head straight towards 'shipping'.
To all businesses in UK & EU be alert at all times and listen to your gut feeling.

the reason they use the same names alot is becasue they actually have accounts set up with thise names mostly in Nigeria and they have fake ID with those names on them as well for accessing these accounts. They are so stupid. Almost nobody falls for these scams anymore I would hope.
ReplyDeleteJeeezzz louise!!!
Hi, Kathleen,
ReplyDeleteI found you because I put in an address on google from a potential client who says he lives in Canada and wants 3 of my art works. He is willing to send a certified cheque for more than my price so I can pay the shipper who is to contact me to pick up the pieces. The address in Canada matches the one sent by another person and my client is in Ireland with a sick son who has cancer. I've been uneasy from the first. I had another experience where the person demanded I send him $3000.00 or Jesus would smite me. And this had some of the verbage that set me off. I did incur some expense on the first one but this time I said I would require money up front before I did anything. I have 3 more emails from him. Am I correct in being suspicious of this guy?
Here is the last email I got:
Hello Julie,
Thanks for your response to my purchase inquiry. I love your pieces of art and must tell you, you are good at what you do. I am collecting these items for personal use as I am an avid fan of art paintings ,sculptures and antiques.
Presently i am out of town spending sometime with my son who was recently diagnosed with Cancer but there shouldn't be a worry as my shipper can come for pickup from you after payment has been finalized and fully cleared your account. I will be sending payment in form of a certified cheque for $3,520 and will need your mailing address where the cheque can be mailed to. You are to deduct the cost of the paintings and disburse the rest to my shipper who will handle the pickup of the piece(s) as well as my other furniture's for my newly acquired property in Oklahoma.
For invoicing/filing purposes, my contact information is as detailed below:
2405 Queen Str. E,
Toronto, Ontario.
M4E 1H6.
I look forward to doing business with you.
Kind Regards,
James.
Total scam - do not proceed!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI found your blog and website and was grateful for all of the information that you have collected. As soon as I read the e-mail I was extremely suspicious and your website confirmed my suspicions. What really tipped me off is that they didn't send the e-mail to the e-mail address listed on my website, but instead to my school e-mail. Which makes me uncomfortable to think how they found it. Regardless here is the e-mail so you can add to your list.
Regards,
Lenore

Hello,
I am emailing to inquire about availability of artwork for sale in
your gallery, if you can ship international and also if you are able
to process Electronically Visa and Master Card Number/Expiry date/Cvv
as payment. Let me know so that i can communicate with you on the
artworks that interest me,you can also indicate to me which of the
arts are sold and which are available on your website.
I will be looking forward to reading from you.
Sincerely
Archer Sarah
I have received sever real email from this Sarah ARCHER, she wants me to use PayPal from my mobile phone and gave me a link to the ap (which I did not open). She will not give me her address so I can calculate shipping charges after being requested 3 times. And says she has had problems with paying by PayPal before. Hmmmmm, I thought since up front she said she uses credit it might be legit since that scares off most of the scammers. I guess not.
