Scam Email: Joe Thomas
Someone just forwarded me this email. We've reported on the use of the name Stan Thomas in the past. The format of this scam is just the same as we've seen to artists, but the items mentioned this time are non-art items from the person who forwarded me the email. It's worth posting, in case an artist gets one just like this but listing their artwork instead.

So what is the scam here? Are they hoping that someone will actually have these really random items and ship them out on a dodgy credit card, or is there something more complex going on?

ReplyDeleteHere is the crux of the scam. They will request this quote. They send the email out to millions but can personalize portions of the email through a template. Once you reply, they may ask for your website so they can keep the personalization fraud going.
Then they will say what they want to buy, and usually they will pick a high volume or high-priced items. They will then reveal they will pay by check and they will have their own courier service pick up the items. They have to include a third party something because that is what the core of the scam hangs on. And here it is: the check will come and it will be for more than the amount owed with an explanation that it includes the fee for the courier service. And the scammer request that the victim deposit the check and forward the extra amount to the courier and they will provide some excuse for why it has to be sent Western Union.
As you can tell by now, the check will be bad. And there is no courier service. The only good money in the equation is coming from the victim and once they send it Western Union (to the scammers just waiting at the other end), it is untraceable.
Their goal is to catch the victim who doesn't check with the bank to see if the check is fraudulent and goes ahead and forwards the money. In the scam, the product doesn't matter and the destination shipping address is made up as well. The only thing that matters is getting the victim to forward that "overpayment" via Western Union. And unfortunately, some people are still falling for this, and that is why I started the blog.
When scammers pretend to pay by credit card, often the card will clear because they use stolen credit card numbers that have not yet been reported as stolen but will always result in a chargeback once the actual owner of the card realizes what is going on.
If I can just get more people to search online before taking action and if I keep posting the scam emails and people's experiences, hopefully we can keep reducing the number of victims.
We're a surplus toner company and get emails like these, on average, 3 times a week. They're almost always asking for high quantity HP, Canon or Xerox items, always have bad grammar beyond spelling and typos (wrong use of word meaning, reversed order or noun,verb,adjective, adverb, etc), and email address is always from a free provider (Aol, Yahoo, Gmail).
ReplyDeleteSome of the better ones will give a credit card number - unfortunately it's stolen. After having an employee fall for one 10 years ago, we now only take credit cards under the same name as the contact, require a billing address and cvc code in addition to card number and expiration date, and we do not ship their first order until the card is accepted and verified.
Thanks for posting this. We are a procurement company based in Thailand and we would have wasted precious time sourcing the product. When I replied asking for additional info, the email address was disabled alrady. That's when I googled the comapany, and it led me to this site. Below the email I received, also on April 8.

I received the same email as referenced above. I didn't think anything of it (getting unsolicited emails off our GSA schedule happens sporadically but not frequently).
ReplyDeleteI Emailed the guy back and referred him to my toner supplier. After going back and forth with the guy, including him sending the same email again, I demanded a phone call. In came from an international number. My toner guy got suspicious when the requester couldn't provide basic details on the order, and then provided a different bill to address (clearly that of the stolen credit card) than the ship to address.
The international number, plus these random addresses that looked residental in nature, one being in rural Georgia and the other in suburban Indiana, got us googling. Found this site and the scam.

I spoke with this person over the phone and could tell instantly he was a fraud but continued to research.
He is saying his company is bgcontractors.net and sources a home office in Cincinnati, after looking at the real BG Contractors I was sure it was a scam, then I typed Bob Gaskie into google and came here. THANK YOU we need more of these blogs. I will try and contribute as we see more and more of these every day.

Got a similar email but they wanted Appliances, 8 refrigerators. One of the phone numbers provided matched one posted here. Instantly identified this as fraudulent. They never use correct grammar. Started off in Detroit, then they want them shipped to El Paso TX, then they say they can pick them up. Finally this Detroit company provides a California Credit Card to an apartment.

* Reverse-searched the address and it's a storage facility. I get several of these a year, often for the same model of Grundfos pump and various other expensive equipment. This address is 45 minutes away from me. If I wasn't busy, I'd drive there, call the number and ask where they're located, then inform him I'm already there and intend to pursue for fraud.

Here is what i got this morning. noticed it was some expensive parts but i went along. After a few emails, i needed a credit card pmt for entire amount and the dude called with a credit card and number but cc did not match his name.... Thanks to who started this website, saved me about 12k worth of parts. Googled address and it was a storage complex in Texas, there is no sky energy in texas, only in carolina, and phone number lead me to here. If it sounds too good to be true, probably is. The good Lord give us that gut feeling for a reason.

We got a request today from Mike Sidney at ALARP for 50 solar modules. Gave us phone number 201-474-5317 and told us to call Thomas in Park Ridge, NJ for a credit card. Thank you for posting this scam.
ReplyDeleteWe also got the same one from "Mike at Alarp" since we deal in industrial supply export it's not unusual for us to get requests for large quantities of chargers, solar panels, etc. from people all over the world. Luckily one of our suppliers was onto this and warned us when we requested the quote. Tell the scammer you require prepayment in the form of a bank wire transfer and do not accept credit cards, that gets rid of them really quickly.

The bill to addresses associated with these cards range from California to Illinois. The first card was ran and it did work, so they are able to provide the necessary information and capability for the cards to be approved. I eventually asked for a copy of the cards and a copy of Jack Simons drivers license. After a few days they faxed over a copy of the last credit card and a copy of his drivers license. Both are comical at how bad and fake they look. The Numbers on the credit card are real you can tell they are the raised numbering but the name on the card is bold non raised and the back of the card has a paragraph on it which says a reader was kind enough to send this in. This had been a pilot program. Ect. The drivers license was worse. It was a California drivers license. His name and street and issue date are really bold. The front says class C and the back says class A. Instead of height is says HOT: 5-10.

Just today he emailed me again and this time switched it up. I told them since last time card did not work that I would need him to fill out a credit app and send a new card. And he did. This time he listed Dorothy Evans as the buyer. Gave me a new card 5466 1602 9198 **** with her name on it. Again the card is fake with really bold letters. They try to make it look real like when they copied the back the made sure to spin the numbers and letters around so they read backwards. But they messed up on the date which on the front is 12/18 and the back if you flipped it it would be 18/12. I asked for a drivers license and in an hour I for a copy of the front of one. This one is from Arizona. Name Dorothy Evans, of 831 West Spur Dr Phoenix AZ 85085. Again this license is comical. Name and address are bold. The picture is a white female short brown hair. the license has Hair color BLU, her Height is 8-15 and her weight is 270. Another thing is the issued date and expiration date are listed month/day/year but in between them her date of birth is listed day/month/year. Looking online at some Arizona license they do not list day/month/year on anything.
On the credit application I asked them to fill out they listed Dorothy Evans as the contact, Eastcoast Contractors as the business name, used the same address as her drivers license, phone number of 201-474-5317, fax number of 201-427-5435, listed that the company started in 2011. On it they list references as Fobb Electric (1221 Victoria St Honolulu with fax number 601-489-2146) and list Unique Supply but no other information.
The address listed with the Fobb Electrics is a high rise apartment complex and the other addresses listed have all been residential houses in neighborhoods.

again these date back to 2011. They change names, numbers, and email addressed but the items they ask for are the same. It is either battery/solar material or Grundfos submersible pumps. They have been getting people for years and if you are not looking into this scam you need to be because these items they want cost thousands of dollars and they are ordering 10-20 every time.
We didn't receive an email as others did but a call from a man named Tom Smith. He requested a quote for 5 Grundfos submersible pumps # 95027335. These total about 36,000.00 from Grainger. He called at 4:45pm and I told him we'd get back to him tomorrow. The next day he called 3 times wanting the quote. After he couldn't provide basic information such as a shipping address, Tax payer ID# or W-9 (in fact he didn't know what a W-9 was). I found this site on google. Today they left a voice mail which stated he was Tyler or Tom Goodman (accent made it hard to tell what he is saying) with Electric Supply looking to buy some Grundfos pumps. So they have changed companies names and his name.

Today "Tom" in a foreign voice called us from 305-901-8264. This is the 3rd or 4th time in the past 6 months. We are a moving company in Southern California. Each time he wants us to pick up something at one of the international airports for him. This time it was 5 piano's. The first time this happened several months ago it was some undefined cargo... several very large boxes. He was going to pay us $3,000.00 dollars. Oh! But first we had to give him our bank account number or credit card so he could make a partial deposit into our account after we put up several hundred dollars of a bond! Just because we are movers doesn't mean we are stupid! Here are the scam's from this guy and this number we have heard about:

2) In the case of cargo... sometimes the cargo may be real but inside are drugs like Cocaine!

Hi we received this famous email from "Mike Sidney of Alap Contractors" today asking for a quote on some ink cartridges. Not knowing his famous trick, we replied telling him we do not have products like that - he was too happy that we responded and replied that he can also buy our products. He went onto our website, and got back to us asking about our products. He even placed Purchase Order buying 2000 pc and asked us to air-shipped it to another address in Winnipeg. The phone number he used this time is 857-201-3514.

Yup. I echo the thanks for this site and others like it. Same "guy" contacted us through our website last week. I just wish we hadn't spent a couple of hours trying to track down and get the pricing on the pump he supposedly wanted. What's the scam? I don't get it--I guess they try to get you to ship the pump to them using a phony credit card? Learned my lesson and will google info provided in any such requests in the future.

LOL, I just received and replied to "Jeff Baxter" from EMPS, Ltd. earlier today. He did ask to use a credit card for the most expensive quoted item. My response:
