Scam Email: Joe Thomas

Someone just forwarded me this email. We've reported on the use of the name Stan Thomas in the past. The format of this scam is just the same as we've seen to artists, but the items mentioned this time are non-art items from the person who forwarded me the email. It's worth posting, in case an artist gets one just like this but listing their artwork instead.

  10. So what is the scam here? Are they hoping that someone will actually have these really random items and ship them out on a dodgy credit card, or is there something more complex going on?

    It just seems a bit odd sending out a request for quotes or pretty specialist items.

    Here is the crux of the scam. They will request this quote. They send the email out to millions but can personalize portions of the email through a template. Once you reply, they may ask for your website so they can keep the personalization fraud going.

    Then they will say what they want to buy, and usually they will pick a high volume or high-priced items. They will then reveal they will pay by check and they will have their own courier service pick up the items. They have to include a third party something because that is what the core of the scam hangs on. And here it is: the check will come and it will be for more than the amount owed with an explanation that it includes the fee for the courier service. And the scammer request that the victim deposit the check and forward the extra amount to the courier and they will provide some excuse for why it has to be sent Western Union.

    As you can tell by now, the check will be bad. And there is no courier service. The only good money in the equation is coming from the victim and once they send it Western Union (to the scammers just waiting at the other end), it is untraceable.

    Their goal is to catch the victim who doesn't check with the bank to see if the check is fraudulent and goes ahead and forwards the money. In the scam, the product doesn't matter and the destination shipping address is made up as well. The only thing that matters is getting the victim to forward that "overpayment" via Western Union. And unfortunately, some people are still falling for this, and that is why I started the blog.

    When scammers pretend to pay by credit card, often the card will clear because they use stolen credit card numbers that have not yet been reported as stolen but will always result in a chargeback once the actual owner of the card realizes what is going on.

    If I can just get more people to search online before taking action and if I keep posting the scam emails and people's experiences, hopefully we can keep reducing the number of victims.

  12. We're a surplus toner company and get emails like these, on average, 3 times a week. They're almost always asking for high quantity HP, Canon or Xerox items, always have bad grammar beyond spelling and typos (wrong use of word meaning, reversed order or noun,verb,adjective, adverb, etc), and email address is always from a free provider (Aol, Yahoo, Gmail).

    Some of the better ones will give a credit card number - unfortunately it's stolen. After having an employee fall for one 10 years ago, we now only take credit cards under the same name as the contact, require a billing address and cvc code in addition to card number and expiration date, and we do not ship their first order until the card is accepted and verified.

  14. I received the same email as referenced above. I didn't think anything of it (getting unsolicited emails off our GSA schedule happens sporadically but not frequently).

    I Emailed the guy back and referred him to my toner supplier. After going back and forth with the guy, including him sending the same email again, I demanded a phone call. In came from an international number. My toner guy got suspicious when the requester couldn't provide basic details on the order, and then provided a different bill to address (clearly that of the stolen credit card) than the ship to address.

    The international number, plus these random addresses that looked residental in nature, one being in rural Georgia and the other in suburban Indiana, got us googling. Found this site and the scam.

I Also got that email and guess what!!! the address on the scam email is my customer's address and also the phone number there is a google number that you has a voice mail (not activated yet) hahaha by the way the address is like 1 block away from my work and i know there is not such bussiness with the name there!!!!

    one last thing the zip code is wrong....
