On the below email, the scammer was stupid, once again, and switched names and email addresses midstream, not remembering which fake identity they had used, and got called on it, but just kept going with the scam, never addressing why the change when asked.
You can tell the person their name is being used in scam emails but there is actually not much they can do to stop it so I'm not sure if its helpful to do or not. But we know, in this case, Judy Delmonico-Roll is NOT the actual scammer but the name this scammer stole to use.
Hi Kathleen,
I came to your blog tonight after finding too many 'red flags' in a recent email exchange with an interested buyer. It seems I'm being baited, too! I'll forward the exchange below. What was additionally puzzling about this one is that the author of the email was the name of an Arizona artist with a very unique name, Judy Delmonico-Roll. As I always do, I googled-searched the name when I got the first email and was thinking a fellow artist was just buying a piece she liked. But then the emails got extremely strange and red flags went off. But I wonder if Ms. Delmonico-Roll knows her name is being used? I wonder if my name will be used next? But my biggest question is, how do these scammers get our names?
I should also add that I likely received another email scam attempt like this just two or three weeks ago. I didn't answer that one until much later and was surprised to find the email address had been deactivated. Once again, a google-search on the name of the sender turned up the identity of another fellow artist.

Hello,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
Unfortunately, Im on my way to France on an official trip(I'm a marketing Executive) and wont be back for another two weeks, I would have come to inspect the piece personally. Im taking your word for true on It though.
I'm okay with the price $500, I think it worth it anyway. If you'd like to know, Im relocating to the South Africa soon and I'm trying to gather some good stuff for my new abode. Im buying yours amongst others, quickly! before someone else grabs it.So, I'll arrange to send you payment ASAP.
However, I'll have to notify my shipper who's helping me move my stuff to get set for the pickup of the piece from your place as I MIGHT be delayed depending on how things goes.
Thanks,
PS: In the mean time, kindly get back to me with your Full Name, contact address and also your phone# so I can get a check prepared and have it sent out to you ASAP.

Hello,
I'm just reading your email now as I have been so busy all day preparing for the conference in the office,it starts this week. Thanks for the details which Ive noted down and have also forwarded to my shipper.
My shipper should be in town sometime next week and will definitely be getting in touch with you for the pickup and also to inspect it for me.
Truth is, I would have handled this much differently if i would be at home but Im a bit pressed for time myself. Im moving to South Africa this month as Im being transferred and Promoted.
As it is, I'm sending you check which will include my shippers fees as well.He has asked for an upfront before coming and since I have no access to a lot of cash, Im trying to kill two birds with a stone.
So, once you have received and cashed the check, deduct your funds and PLEASE help me send the remaining funds to him(shipper). I will forward his contact details to you once you have received the payment.
Now I'm concluding you are a responsible person and I can therefore entrust you with this arrangement.I'll let you know Immediately the check is sent out to you so you should be looking out for it.
I'll surely give you a call later when Im free.
Many thanks and talk to you soon,
Judy-Roll
I have been a target of art scammers for years. I am tech saavy, so they have never fooled me. However, it is strange that I have received emails from 3 scammers in just the past couple of months. Even though they continually change their email addresses, I thought I would include the addresses of the most recent three:
ReplyDeletejamebwn@yahoo.com, smithfrank002@googlemail.com, mathinjoe@rocketmail.com,
Stay strong and keep alert!

I had the exact same exchange today. It sounded fishy so I checked this site. Thanks for the heads up.
DeleteToday, September 9th, I got the same email as "Anonymous" did on the 7th. I found your blog after googling the unusual "Judy-Roll" name. Thanks for posting your experience; glad I found this info before I had a chance to do something I would regret.
ReplyDeleteDitto on September 7 and September 8. Just got the "Judy-Roll Delmonico" at judymoz@blumail.org

Appreciate the blog and helpful resource.
This scamer is really getting around. Perhaps the works are being seen on artists' websites or in art shows that have their catalogs online.
ReplyDeleteHello All
ReplyDeleteI happened upon this site whilst doing some internet detective stuff. I am not an artist (as such - graphic designer actually), but a client of mine runs a retail business. She had an email in her inbox from Thailand (as has been mentioned in previous postings above). Almost same address... but a different building number and name of contact.
I suspected it as being suspicious, so we are treating it as such.
It would appear that this scam is not isolated to art dealers, but anyone that the scammers feel they can extort goods/services/money from.
Someone further up in the postings wondered how they are getting email addresses... and addresses that you would know. I believe they are probably doing it via some kind of 'trojan/virus' that once on your computer, will use the email contacts of breached computer to then forward emails using those compromised email addresses. Invariably these contacts will be linked some where along the line. In an obvious example, if a friend of yours has had their computer breached/hacked, then then you will be in their contacts. An automated 'bot' on their computer will then send out emails to you... from your friend... and so giving credibility to the email. You then open it and may even click on the link within the message or download the attachment. This in turn may try and install a 'trojan/virus' on your computer.
The above is based on articles that I have read on the net. I am not saying I am 100% correct about what I have typed, but it gives you an idea. There are plenty of resources floating around in the 'ether' that explain in far more detail what I have mentioned.
My only advice is to make sure that you use a secure method of taking payment, maybe set-up a free PayPal account or get a payment gateway set-up on your website. That way the banks will vet the payment before either accepting it... or if it's bogus... declining it.
Hope this helps.
I received an e-mail from Judy Delmonico-Roll on Oct. 15:

I was suspicious, so I searched for that name, and now I know for sure that it's a scam. I won't reply to her again.___

I received exactly this same scam message from someone calling herself Nina Loach today.
ReplyDeleteIdentical e-mail from Kathy Rush, kattlerush@yahoo.com, 15 March 2013.
ReplyDeleteFound the most probable visitor to my website (same date as receiving the e-mail. From Johannesburg), a referred visitor from White Columns artist registry. So that's an e-mail source for them.
We got same scammer email. Before sending our contact information we googled text of his email and saw your blog. Thanks for Posting!!!
ReplyDelete"Hi,

The follow up email from Bill read the same exact as others in your blog. Thanks for Posting your experience!!!
I just got the Bill Johnson scam too. Too bad they can't turn their cleverness into something productive instead of malicious.
ReplyDelete-not a chump today
I received an email from Nina Loach last evening. The wording in the email is vague so I wrote back asking which art piece she is interested in and asked if she were interested in a print. I have not heard back. She will not hear back from me. Thanks for the blog. Bob G.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathleen,
ReplyDeleteI've got an art scammer on the hook. As I read through your blog I see emails using the exact script the guy contacting me used, including typos! I had a suspicion it was a fake and when I asked him to pay using PayPal and he ignored it and wouldn't give an address I decided to search for art scams.
Thanks for posting these! Artists are the last people that can afford to be scammed!

Here it is 2015 and I just received my third exchange from this same address ;-( Thank you so much for this site... I am an internationally exhibited artist and have been attempted-scammed multiple times. Nearly fell for the bad-check scam once ;-(
