Scam Email: Michael Draxler

Kathleen,

I just received this email this morning and I knew it was a scam the moment I read it. I’ve seen a few similar to this one over the years.

No signature, bad English, certified check, and last but not least, they want to pick it up instead of having me ship it.

Thought you might want to add the name to the list.

Also, still trying to discern how he found this. It is titled as this on Saatchi Online but my Saatchi account shows a different email account. So kind of strange how he found me?

Do you still have .............. available for sale as i am highly interested in it and do you accept Paypal as a mode of payment and also if pick up is acceptable, hope to read from you soon

Hm, that's interesting how he makes his trick? The artist wouldn't give artwork to pickup agent before getting money on paypal account. Anybody knows how it works?

    ReplyDelete
  8. This scam is about cash, not about the artwork. Some scammers use the PayPal angle hoping to hold their potential victims in the scam "funnel". They will generally do one of two things - they will end up having some story as to why PayPal can't be used after all but they will send a check (which brings it back to the traditional way this scam works), or they will attempt to send a faked PayPal payment received email notification that looks like it has come from PayPal directly. But it is fake. Victims that never check their sc isn't manually assume they have received the money when they haven't.

But remember, they could care less about the art. They are trying to overpay and have done story as to why you need to wire the overpayment somewhere - to a nonexistent shipper, back to them, etc. once you wire money, it's the same as cash, untraceable, and gone.

So the way to avoid this scam is to never accept overpayments for any reason, and never ever ever wire money to anyone when you are the seller of something online.

  12. Couple of days ago, sister of my wife (she's an artist in Ukraine) got the e-mail from him and he asked for one of her works that he wants to buy and told that will transfer money via PayPal. She asked me if she could use my PayPal address for that.

I sent a request for payment to that address and after some time got a very suspicious e-mail that looked like PayPal's email but was obviously fake:

'You've Just Received A Payment (0002) From Michael Draxler
    service@Intl.PayPal '

This e-mail also states that funds will be pending on your account until you send part of this money via MoneyGram to some shipping company (all of this sounds like complete bullshit).

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes - perfect example how scammers use the angle of PayPal for their scam... knowing some people have convinced themselves they are safe so long as they insist on being paid via PayPal.

But they have figured out how to send a fake PayPal email and try to get their victims to wire money before they find out no money has been sent to PayPal at all.

Thanks for sharing this example, to help warn others.

    - I answered how did he find me and his second email:

I really appreciate it. Am Michael from Ireland I am a marine biologist and am currently at sea at the moment, i am buying the item as a gift for my Dad, i want to make it a surprise for him,he wont know anything about the item until they get delivered to him, i can only pay through Paypal as i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i have my bank account attached to my Paypal account and this is why i insisted on paying you through Paypal,So please kindly get back to me with your Paypal details and your best price for the item so i can proceed with the payment and after the payment has been done, i have a pick up agent that will come around to pick the item up so don't add shipping fees and will be done after i have made the payments for the item

    - it sounds very weird to me and I google his email and came into this site! thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I got exactly the same, what is most strange for me: He wants to send someone to pick it, not send.. at this point I start to suspect and google it. Here I found you! thanks! what is his purpose?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Scammers typically have as part of their scam story that they are relocating and will have a shipper pick up the art. They do that because that part of their fake story explains why they then will over pay for the art and ask the victim to wire the extra money to the shipper.

The shipper doesn't exist and the scammer could care less about the art... it never gets to that. The scam is focused on the victim wiring money (which ends up going directly to the scammer) and once wired money is picked up, its the same as cash, untraceable, and gone.

Only then do many victims discover the original payment is a counterfeit check, a stolen credit card, or a faked PayPal email notification of money received (when no money has actually been received).

  17. Michael Draxler- m_draxler@aol.com

May be they use the accounts at "Saatchi online" too and pick up Mail-adresses by "website of the artist".

Got a second mail this morning - first mail received some months ago:

Do you still have The Spirit available for sale as i am highly interested in it and do you accept Paypal as a mode of payment and also if pick up is acceptable, hope to read from you soon.

Special thanks to you Katie for your mission !

  18. There's a similar money laundry scheme where scammers book hotel rooms and then insist on overpaying as a fee for the travel agent. the stay may then be cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That is an interesting twist on the same scam. Scammers sniff out any vulnerabilities in how things are sold online.

    Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. did i get this right? they make you send a paypal request. then they send you a fake acknowledgement with apparently more money paid, which they then ask you to remit to some other account? is that how they make their money?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Pretty close. They will send a fake PayPal email saying they've the money hoping you don't actually check right away ( and NOT by clicking on any links in that fake email!), and then try to get their victims to wire the amount "over" to some fake shipper or saying their accountant or wife made a mistake. The goal is to get money wired to them because once it is picked up, it is untraceable and as good as cash gone.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yup, same here! The message was received this morning.
What do they thinking??? They think the artists are rich? :))

    ReplyDelete
  23. I doubt scammers care. But they DO think artists are a vulnerable group who are generally trusting and really want to sell their art... which makes them more likely to fall for this scam.

Scammers do often go after those that don't have much to begin with - seniors on limited incomes, micro business owners, individuals selling online just trying to make some spare cash.

Remember...scammers general lack a soul. They don't care.

Glad to hear you didn't fall for this one.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ok got it, actually they send an fake paypal writing, which sais, that the money has been transfered (+900 Euros on top) and it will be booked onto your account once you have transfered the 900 extra via Money Gram. this money is supposed to be for the shipping charge... and i do not think that they think artists are richt, but maybe they thinnk artists are not into the interenet buisiness too much and don't understand anything about money transfer etc. besides every artist is happy to sell a painting. also they do that with cars and other things

    ReplyDelete
  25. thanks katiemoe! actually your blog is the only thing i found online about michael draxler! as i have enough experience i wouldn't have fallen for it, but i would have had trouble finding out the thruth an probably wasted too much time on that contact... i also wrote concering this matter to paypal and saatchi art (where they find the artists), let's see if maybe they warn their artists. is there actually a plattform, where scam can be reported in general?

  27. Yes, can confirm as well that the guy is still active! Got the same message as above. We emailed a few times back and forth, I asked him for a adress for the invoice, which I even got, then I send a PDF invoice and never heard back again...so far at least. He wanted to have a payment request from me, which I sent. Then after, communication was dead. What to do about it? Just purely ignore in case he sends another mail? Happy to have found that blog here....

  42. Just got this one from "Walker Dora" from Oregon....looks like i should be expecting that Paypal email soon...

Thanks for the message.. I must tell you I intend to give my wife a surprise with the immediate purchase of the piece. Also If you'd like to know, I'm relocating to the Philippines soon and our wedding anniversary is fast approaching. So I'm trying to gather some good stuff to make this event a surprise one. I'm okay with the painting and the price I think it's worth it anyway, so I'll be sending a check..
As regarding shipping, you don't have to worry about that in order not to leave any clue to my wife for the surprise. as soon as you receive and cash the check, my shipping agent (who is also moving my personal effect) will contact you to arrange pick-up..
I would have come to purchase the piece myself but, at the moment, am on training voyage to the North Atlantic Ocean (I'm an ocean engineer) with new hires who are fresh from graduate school and won't be back for another couple of weeks..

    Regards!
PS: In the meantime, kindly get back to me with your full name (you want the check payable to) cell phone no. and contact address (preferably for USPS OR UPS not P.O box) where a check can be mailed to so I can get the check prepared and have it mailed out to you asap..
    Thank you!

She asked me to send $1,200 to her delivery guy through money gram because she couldnt use money gram or any other wire transfer solutions while on the sea. I actually agreed to it thinking it's a real situation.

"I was just about to make the payments when i had this little problem with the picking up of the item , I am currently on sea and i am buying the item for my Dad as i explained earlier on and i tried to book pick up with my pick up agent, but they asked me to pay first before they can make the booking, and they only accept Money Gram Transfer for payments and they don't accept Paypal or bank transfer and I tried to send the money online but i couldn't and I am on sea and there is no way i can find a Money Gram agent to make the transfer to my pick up agent, so i wanted to ask if it was ok for me to include my pick up agent's fees in the payments I am about to send through Paypal, my pick up agent charged $1200 plus insurance and all of that, please can i include their money in the payments I want to send then after i have made the payments you will help me forward the $1200 to my pick up agent through Money Gram Transfer, this I would have done myself and not bother you but the for the fact that I am currently on sea, so after I have made the payments you will help me send $1200 to my pick up agent through Money Gram Transfer,I just want to seek your consent before going ahead with the payments,I will more than appreciate if you mail me back, and I will be making the payments shortly.

PS:the shipping company's Head quarters and any pick up fees to be paid is sent to their head quarters by the payee, so the money for pick up will be sent to their head quarters through Money Gram Transfer(this can be done from any post office) at Money Gram's office

Here is the agent information needed for the transfer.....

    Receiver's Name: Carolyn Rosado

    City: New Britain

    State : Connecticut

    Zip code: 06051

    Country: USA

    Tel #: +1-614-996-4693"

Things got fishy when she was saying that she sent the money and I couldn't receive it on my account. She persisted that I should follow some email instructions sent from PayPal in order to receive it and that the email might be in junk/spam folder. I called PayPal and they said that there is no such case that PayPal would send an email asking the user to follow any instructions in order to receive money. Then I checked the email address on Google and here is were I ended up.

Greatly appreciate this forum and everyone sharing their experience.

    Thanks and stay safe

I'm thinking of proceeding to get the fake paypal mail and then forwarding it to paypal itself. Or they wouldn't care?

  61. I got the same with Carolyn rosado
Just how did they get to a website for horses here in Germany
Apparently she mailed the money as I got a notice from PayPal
    What now

    ReplyDelete
  62. Check by manually logging into your paypal account (do NOT click on a link from the email) and see if that notice is even real. Many scammers fake paypal money sent notifications and even fake landing pages if you click on the link in the email.

If you determine the paypal notification is fake (I bet it is), then just delete, ignore, and move on.

Scammers do not care who they are emailing or what you are selling. They are after your cold hard cash and disappear quickly once they get it. But you can protect yourself by (a) never accepting overpayments for any reason (b) never ever ever wire money to anyone if you are the seller.

  68. I thought I'd add my experience as a warning. Conversation with frank Wilson, frank.123456.wilson@gmail.com

    Hi Frank,
That is really your responsibility regarding other fees. You are welcomed to pay through Paypal, or where you saw my artwork. But I'm not willing to accept payments any other ways. This part due to the amount of fraudulent emails that circulate through the Internet. Regards, Maria

I was just about to make the payments when i had this little problem with the picking up of the item , I am currently on sea and i am buying the item for my Dad as i explained earlier on and i tried to book pick up with my pick up agent, but they asked me to pay first before they can make the booking, and they only accept Money Gram Transfer for payments and they don't accept Paypal or bank transfer and I tried to send the money online but i couldn't and I am on sea and there is no way i can find a Money Gram agent to make the transfer to my pick up agent, so i wanted to ask if it was ok for me to include my pick up agent's fees in the payments I am about to send through Paypal, my pick up agent charged $750 plus insurance and all of that, please can i include their money in the payments I want to send then after i have made the payments you will help me forward the $750 to my pick up agent through Money Gram Transfer, this I would have done myself and not bother you but for the fact that I am currently on sea, so after I have made the payments you will help me send $750 to my pick up agent through Money Gram Transfer,I just want to seek your consent before going ahead with the payments,I will more than appreciate if you mail me back, and I will be making the payments shortly. PS:the shipping company's Headquarters and any pick up fees to be paid is sent to their headquarters by the payee, so the money for pick up will be sent to their headquarters through Money Gram Transfer(this can be done from any post office) at Money Gram's office

    Hi Frank,
I have since sent you an email of your invoice. Can you please let me know when you plan to pay this? Maria. Yes i will give you the address of my pick up agent when its time i would love it if you can send me your paypal invoice attach with your e-mail so i can make the payment and i would like you to send me the pic again.hope to hear from you soonest.

    Hi Frank,
Sure. That sounds fine. I will get back to you as soon as possible. Would you please give me the details of the person who is picking up the artwork, and can you ask him to supply some ID. Its just for precautionary reasons, as I would a lot more at ease handing up over.I will get back to as soon as possible with my paypal details.

    1. you cannot stop them, just be smarter than them. It's always the same style, also be wary. :) I never had anyone request to buy my paintings as they are ridiculously expensive and I am not a "real" artist. So I was wary about this at all in the first place, then the "pick up" and "whatnot" adds to it as well

This is the third time this has happened to me. The first time it got as far as me receiving a cheque. I had it traced, and it came from a Nigerian student who'd been paid for some reason by his college. and he'd reproduced and altered the cheque. So they may all be coming from oone source in Nigeruia. Next time I shall take great pleasure in telling them to stick their payment where the sun don't shine.

Do you still have The DEIDAD CAÓTICA II available for sale as i am highly interested in it and do you accept Paypal as a mode of payment and also if pick up is acceptable, hope to read from you soon
....I really appreciate it, I will like to buy the two paintings in the attachment . I Am Ariadni Hager from Greece. I am a marine biologist and am currently at sea at the moment, i am buying the item as a gift for my Dad, i want to make it a surprise for him,he wont know anything about the item until they get delivered to him, i can only pay through Paypal as i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i have my bank account attached to my Paypal account and this is why i insisted on paying you through Paypal,So please kindly get back to me with your Paypal details and your best price for the item so i can proceed with the payment and after the payment has been done, i have a pick up agent that will come around to pick the item up so don't add shipping fees and will be done after i have made the payments for the item

  102. Today I had the same email in my inbox, also from Agost Emiliano, requesting paypal. I am just surprised how "he" thinks this would have worked?? I would have waited for the cash on the bank account anyhow from paypal. So ridiculous. I get the check cash scams but the paypal scams? Anyone enlighten me? Anyhow, I was suspicious and started googling and immidiately found this link which I sent him in return :)
