Hello There,
My name is Jackson Greene from California. I actually observed my wife has been viewing your website on my laptop and i guess she likes your piece of work. I'm also impressed and amazed to have seen your various works too, You are doing a great job. I would like to purchase one of your Paintings "[name inserted here]", as a surprise to my wife on our anniversary. Also, let me know if you accept CHECK as mode of Payment.

Thanks and best regards
Jackson.

Seems scammy to me, but I couldn’t verify on your Stop Art Scams Blog. Which is a wonderful service you’ve taken on!

The wording includes a sentence like Steven Leavitt’s though. Agreed?

Best,
Dale

  1. Hahaha. I received the same email last night. They're always the same: wife saw your work, want it to be a surprise, anniversary... I figured I'd strong him along and replied, "No checks". Sent a detailed PayPal solution this morning. Claims to be out in the middle of the ocean. Last time, a different scammerer claimed to be in a submarine!!! I wasn't born yesterday!

  2. Haha, got the same from Jackson Banks a couple of days ago, except he directly offered Paypal as mode of payment...

  3. Yes, scammers will do one of two things typically when they "offer" to pay by paypal (hoping to further lure the victim into thinking it must be a legitimate sale). They will offer to pay by paypal and then come up with some reason why paypal is not working for them and offer to pay by check instead (getting them back to their counterfeit check standard method), or they will attempt to send a phishing email that looks EXACTLY like a paypal email that says the money was received and deposited in your paypal account. But if you go manually check your account, it is not. They are hoping victims never check before wiring money to the (non-existent) shipping company, which is just them at the other end.

  6. I just had two seemlingly esrnest emails from DENNIS POTTER (dennispotter101@gmail.com) explaining he was an ocean engineer but observed his wife checking out our website and could I send some recommendations for $500-1500. I was suspicious and the second email confirmed my fears: here he wanted all my info so he could send a check to me and then he would arrange pick up. I didn't give him anything except "Your scam has been reported to the authorities and several online at scam sites. The district attorney's office will follow up."

  7. This is the EXACT verbatim letter I received last week from a Potter Dennis from South Carolina. His E mail address is PotterDennis101@gmail.com .
Also a Teresa Raleigh from Crete Greece wanted 2 paintings . She wanted to send me a third party payment through Quick Books for the shippers she supposedly chose to use. Red flags went up, had to close down my account so the funds wouldn't be credited, hours on the phone , MasterCard confirmed the C.C. she used was invalid and to call the police. Her info: ts.raleigh@aol.com

I want to warn of the scams being carried out by the couple of thieves: Philippe Ballesio and Rosaline Ballesio, they manage the companies: Btcmt4 and others, those companies that offer services that do not work. They charge money in advance and then the systems they sell stop working, many people are reporting being scammed by these people, please report them

Put this name on the list. I did respond to see what would happen. I requested a copy of a driver's license, verifiable address no post office box addresses and cashiers check or take as credit card sales. There was no mention of which painting suspect was interested in. Anyway, when I replied the e-mail address was not deliverable. It confirmed my suspicions. I get about 2 to 3 e-mails like this a year. Usually I don't respond. But I had time on my hands and thought I would go fishing....

    Dear Susan,
Thanks for the message, I have view the images you sent to me. Will purchase the "Looking Towards Colorado II - 2013, 12" x 9". I must tell you I intend to give my Husband a surprise with the immediate purchase of the piece. Also If you'd like to know, I'm relocating to Canada soon and our wedding anniversary is fast approaching. So I'm trying to gather some good stuff to make this event a surprise one. I am buying the piece as part of gifts to him (quickly before someone else grabs it). Kindly email me the asking price asap. I would authorize a Check to you for the payment. As regarding shipping, you don't have to worry about that in order not to leave any clue to my Husband for the surprise. as soon as you receive and cash the check, my shipping agent (who is also moving my Truck and Properties) will contact you to arrange for the pick-up. I would have handled this much differently if I'd been at home but at the moment, am on training voyage to the North Atlantic Ocean, (I'm a Civil Marine Engineer) with new hires who are fresh from graduate school and won't be back for another couple of weeks.

    Regards,

    Whiteney Jackson.

PS: In the meantime, kindly get back to me with your full Name as you want it to appear on the check, Address where you want the check delivered by courier service including your zip code and phone number, so the check can be sent right away.

They typically operate in well practiced groups and it is unlikely you will learn anything real about their identity or location. And no authorities will do anything because no monetary loss has occurred (I'm glad!). So best to best delete it and move on.

    Hello Lisa,

Thank you for getting back to me. You have lovely pieces! I like them because they speak volume. Having carefully looked through the pictures of your works. I have chosen the piece ( "QUENCH" 24X32" Giclee Print & "LACORUNA WELCOME" 24X36" ). I am presently working on my relocation to the Philippines soon, thus, I'm doing everything possible to make this event quite a memorable one.

My wife handles the family bank cards and Paypal transactions so I am choosing a check to keep this a complete surprise as intended. Consequently, I would authorize a check to you for the payment of the chosen piece of work as soon as I have your; Full name and contact address ( preferably for US Mail delivery no P.O box ).

Soon as you receive the check and it clears in your bank, I will have my personal shipping agent (who is also moving my other properties) contact you to arrange for shipping/pick up of the piece from you. This is to avoid my wife receiving it if being directly shipped to my address which could ruin the surprise for the wedding anniversary.

Kindly send me your cell number where I can reach you in your email.

    Thanks and best regards,

    David Larson.

  44. Oh no, I got one of these emails for the first time and didn't realize this was a scam until I had already sent him my mailing address. What's gonna happen?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nothing further now that you know. They will likely attempt to send you a check (which will be counterfeit) for the amount plus a whole bunch for their "shipper" (who is non-existent) and ask you to send the shipping amount to their fake shipper via wire transfer (it's just them at the other end of that wire transfer).

So don't do it. Just ghost them now. Don't reply, block their email, don't even look at their follow-up email. They play a numbers game and will soon move on to their next potential victims.

It's possible they will add your name, email, address to common scammer lists that get passed around, so you may see more attempts on you, but you are educated now so don't reply to any of these type of requests...

I'm glad you didn't lose any money.

    3. Taye Diggs back at it again! It’s a real shame, Hollywood must not be treating him right 😂

      Dear Susie,

My name is Taye, an academic event organizer. Please note I am hearing impaired.

I hope this email finds you well. I am requesting an artist who specializes in illustration or drawing. I am writing to inquire about your interest and availability in assisting me on a project that requires illustration for an upcoming workshop.

The project is expected to run in 16 weeks, and we are looking for an artist who can create illustrations that align with the theme of the workshop. The illustrations will be used as visual aids for the participants and will be printed on handouts, slides, and other materials.

We are looking for an artist who has a unique style and can bring creativity to the project. As such, we would like to commission you to create the illustrations for us. We have a budget of $1000 for each piece, and we are looking to commission several pieces from you over the course of the project.

Please let me know if you are interested in this project and want more information. We can schedule a meeting to discuss further details and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

      Best regards,

  50. Hello from Italy.
A few months ago I received two similar emails from these two contacts:

    samuelpreston101@gmail.com

    gyuri.hollosy04@gmail.com

I did a little research on internet and I found that they are attempts at frote. They contact you interested in purchasing your artwork, but it's actually a scam as they want to get paid up front. Be careful and do not send any of your works.

    All the best.

With that being said, I would like to purchase some of your works as a surprise gift to my wife in honor of our upcoming wedding anniversary. Hi,

Thanks for your response, I must tell you I intend to give my husband a surprise with the immediate purchase of the piece 50 x 75-$2,450 . Also If you'd like to know, I'm relocating to Canada soon and our wedding anniversary is fast approaching. So I'm trying to gather some good stuff to make this event a surprise one. I am buying the piece as part of gifts to him (quickly before someone else grabs it). i will authorize a CHECK to you for the payment.

As regarding shipping, you don't have to worry about that in order not to leave any clue to my husband for the surprise. My shipping agent (who is also moving my Truck and my Properties) will contact you to arrange for the pick-up of the piece (this is to avoid my husband receiving it,if been shipped directly to my address would ruin the surprise for this event). You both have to sign a proof of pick up at the most. So as soon as you receive the CHECK and it clears in your bank, my shipping agent will get intouch..

As regarding payment, I would like to inform you, that my husband handles the family credit card/bank and PayPal transaction. So i would authorize a CHECK to you for the payment.

    Regards,
    Ellen Morris

PS: In the meantime, kindly get back to me with your FULL NAME as you want it to appear on the CHECK, ADDRESS (PHYSICAL ADDRESS PLS..FedEx does not deliever to P.O.BOX ) where you want the CHECK delivered by courier service including your ZIPCODE and MOBILE NUMBER, so the CHECK can be sent at the earliest.

I’m sorry I can not call at this time because my spouse would get to know about this as it was supposed to be a surprise.
Does this have anything to do with depositing of your check? Please let me know.
Proceed and make the deposit so we can proceed.

I totally understand your concerns. I know sending payment by means of PayPal or Venmo requires a sending fees which would be deducted from my money (the $5,000). Also, since my pick up representative would be picking up, you would only need to let me know the pick up address and the piece would be picked up for onward delivery.

My pick up representative doubles as the one in charge of our surprise anniversary event so the additional funds is for pick up/shipping and handling as well as to get the venue booked.(you don’t have to bother about all these)

I trust I have answered all your questions. Get back once it’s deposited.

    Best Regards

  68. There's a new art scam where buyer wants you to sell your art as ntf through scam website. You'll lose at least the gas fee you pay, which is usually few hundred dollars. One of these sites is platinumbullnfts.
Someone should write about this type of scam, because it's new and people fall for it quite easily.
