He has already sent us something a few months ago with almost the exact email:

I just got a somewhat scammy-sounding email this morning. I'm so glad I checked out his name! Here it is:

--Then I replied to him with price and shipment info on the piece, to which he quickly replied (and sounded even more scammy):
Thanks for your prompt reply.I really appreciate your detailed breakdown and frankness on this.
Unfortunately, Im on my way to India on an official trip(I'm a marketing Executive) and wont be back for another two weeks, I would have come to inspect the piece personally. Im taking your word for true on It though .Im okay with the price, I think it worth it anyway, it shows that you took your time to perfect its creation, If you'd like to know, Im relocating soon to South Africa (johannesburg) to be precise and I'm trying to gather some good stuff for my new abode. Im buying yours amongst others, quickly! before someone else grabs it.So, I'll arrange to send you payment ASAP.
However, I'll have to notify my shipper who's helping me move my stuff from the States to get set for the pickup of the piece from your place as I MIGHT be delayed in India depending on how things goes.
Thanks,
PS: In the mean time, kindly get back to me with your contact address and also your
phone# so I can get certified check prepared and have it sent out to you ASAP.
Pieter.
-- I appreciate everyone who is posting about this! And I'm very grateful to the Anti-Scam Samurai. :)
Kathleen:
ReplyDeleteSure glad i found you. Peter Glendover, a guy on your list, has sent me a check for a picture on my website with, you guessed it, a substantial amount over the price, given me a "shipper' name, and asked me to send them funds via western union for the shipping. He claims to be in India for a meeting and is moving to so Africa. I've stupidly deposited the check, against the advice of my banker, and it looks like it has cleared. Jeez, what a mess, and i knew it was too convoluted a deal to be for real.
Obviously, i'm not going to send funds to this "shipper' maybe, too, the deposit will prove to have been bogus if we watch it long enough, and i wouldn't be obligated to send him his funds back if they prove to be fraudulent.
Would most appreciate any thoughts and advice you might have.
Gosh, i'm glad to have found you.
Sincerely,
Neal
Neal,
ReplyDeleteThe check hasn't actually cleared at the bank. It has been accepted for deposit. A VERY different thing. Most people don't realize this and think the check must be good because the bank accepted it for deposit.
What will happen - and the scammers count on this, is that it takes a little time but eventually the bank DOES figure out it is fraudulent and ALL banks have policies saying they can withdraw the amount back out as soon as it is determined to be fraudulent and the depositor is liable for the full amount.
But while that is going on, the scammer rushes the victim to send their own GOOD money via wire transfer and then they disappear.
That is how the scam works.
What is so so great is that you figured out to google it before sending any money and there was a posting on the use of this fake name and we interrupted the scam and you didn't lose any money. Hip-hip-hooray!
Take that scammers!

I am contacting because we have written several letters through the embassy in attempts to reach members of my late client's extended family who will stand as beneficiaries to his estates, especially his invested funds on which we have recently received an ultimatum from the bank.
